Job description

As part of the multi disciplinary team (MDT) in the community mental health team for older adults, you will provide specialist occupational therapy assessment and intervention to service users across the Borough of Bromley. You will promote active engagement in meaningful occupations and facilitate the skills development and independence of service users. The postholder will work in collaboration with other Occupational Therapists in the CMHT in contributing to the development and delivery of the OT pathway, while also holding care co-ordination responsibility for a small, defined number of service users.

Main duties of the job
  1. To manage a clinical caseload
  2. To work as a member of the MDT
  3. To support the development of evidence-based Occupational Therapy practice.
  4. To provide occupational therapy assessment and interventions via individual 1:1 work and the group pathway.
  5. To participate in research/audit activities
  6. To supervise the work of Support Workers and Occupational Therapy students on placement with the team
  7. Contribute to and carry out risk assessment & risk management plans
  8. To provide specialist occupational therapy advice to the MDT
  9. To work independently without direct supervision
  10. To follow an agreed job plan

Job responsibilities
  1. To work with service users to identify occupational therapy goals as part of the multi-disciplinary care plan, using specialist mental health, occupational therapy assessment tools and treatment techniques
  2. To manage a capped caseload of service users with complex mental health needs, taking on the role of Care Co-ordinator.
  3. To be back up on duty rota covering full time band 6 OT when required.
  4. To work with service users in a variety of settings in order to provide the most effective assessment & interventions
  5. To plan & implement service user led individual and/or group interventions, using graded activity to achieve therapeutic goals
  6. To ensure service users health, social, cultural and spiritual needs are considered at all times
  7. To assess for and provide basic equipment to enhance independence in daily living skills for service users with a physical disability in addition to their mental health needs. Referring onwards to other services when required e.g. social services and housing associations.
  8. To monitor, evaluate and modify treatment in order to measure progress and identify outcomes
  9. To plan and deliver services within the community mental health framework for older adults utilising the dialog scale when appropriate
  10. To apply a high level of understanding of the effect of disability and provide training and advice on life skills to maximise functional ability
  11. To assess the occupational needs of service users and establish and evaluate appropriate treatment interventions
  12. To identify appropriate & inappropriate referrals and prioritise workload
  13. To manage effective discharge ensuring service user and all relevant agencies are given relevant information
  14. To contribute to and carry out risk assessment & risk management plans
  15. To work as part of the MDT and attend all relevant clinical meetings
  16. To apply increasingly complex skills and knowledge in order to establish professional competence and fitness to practice as a Band 6 OT
  17. To attend all relevant mandatory training as directed by the Trust
  18. To contribute to CPD through participation in internal and external training and other development opportunities
  19. To maintain and update a CPD portfolio
  20. To contribute to the teams clinical governance and quality agenda
  21. To ensure practice is evidence based
  22. To demonstrate understanding and application of national guidelines and legislation relating to mental health & social care provision
  23. Observe and apply Health and Safety regulations
  24. To apply risk management procedures at all times
  25. To promote and facilitate service user involvement in own clinical area
Person Specification
  • Minimum of 2 years experience working as an OT within a mental health setting
  • Access to a vehicle for community work
