Job Summary
The post holder is responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of evidenced-based care, working collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients.

Main duties of the job
- To plan and prioritise the team's workload to ensure the effective delivery of Occupational Health provision which will require the formulation and adjustment of plans and rotas to ensure service needs and delivery.
- To provide clinical and managerial leadership to nursing and support staff, to ensure effective running of the unit in the absence of Nurse Team Manager.
- To be responsible for the delivery of high quality occupational health nursing care, providing specialist advice and clinical services to the managers and staff of Aneurin Bevan University Health Board.
- To promote health and safeguard from risks arising from work and the working environment.
- To support the development and maintenance of the nurse led Occupational Health service.
- To assist in the development and implementation of Occupational Health procedures and policies.
- To promote evidence-based practice for client care and act as a role model.
- To provide day to day delivery of the occupational health service including case management.
- To work closely with and support the team to establish good working relationships with staff at regional and national level.
- To work in conjunction with other disciplines in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of service provision to ensure the client pathway through the occupational health service is effective and timely.

- Managerial / Leadership: Day to day management of the team. Allocating work to ensure the effective delivery of client assessment/care. Maintain confidentiality with sensitive information i.e. staffing, financial and client issues. Participate in service development by contributing to the development of team, through unit/department meetings. Participate in the effective and efficient use of physical and financial resources. Have an awareness of own limitations and escalate to a more senior level circumstances/situations that may be detrimental to the well-being of clients or colleagues. May be required (dependent on level of experience) to take charge of a group of clients with the guidance and supervision of the person with continuing responsibility/Nurse in charge.
- Clinical: Assess the clients Occupational Health needs, plan, implement and evaluate situations and care in order to ensure the delivery of effective client care. Ensure the principles set out in the Fundamentals of Care are incorporated into daily practice to ensure a high-quality service for the patients and clients. Maintain clients records to ensure information is accurate and up to date. Ensure that clients are involved in the planning and delivery of care. Ensure client needs are met by working collaboratively with other professionals and agencies, especially in relation to ongoing care needs. Ensure that effective communication is established and maintained with clients, taking accurate message information on the phone or from seniors, relaying all environmental and client information to the nurse in charge and remain polite and courteous at all times. Communicate complex and sensitive information to clients some of whom may have special needs/learning disabilities or other barriers to communication. Administer medication e.g., intramuscular/subcutaneous/intradermal medications, ensuring that procedures are compliant with Aneurin Bevan University Health Board Policy. Carry out procedures in relation to care of patients e.g. venepuncture, vaccinations, display screen equipment screening, skin surveillance, spirometry. Undertake health surveillance for staff exposed to biological, chemical, or physical workplace hazards (including blood borne infections, pathogens in other bodily fluids, respiratory or skin sensitisers etc.). To participate in the development and implementation of audit and evaluation of techniques and processes, ensuring a high quality of service is delivered. To participate in evaluation of the occupational health service, and implement changes as required and agreed with the management team. Recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations. Participate in the responsibility to maintain a clean environment and ensure all members of staff follow cleaning responsibilities.
- Clinical Governance: Take a proactive role in the management of risk, i.e. risk assessments, reporting incidents and near misses. Assuming all reasonable precautions for a safe and secure environment for self and others in accordance with Health and Safety legislation reporting any areas of concern to the Nurse in Charge. Use evidence-based practice in nursing interventions by keeping self-updated in line with NMC PREP requirements. Proposes changes to practices, procedures and implements in own area. Responsibility for Financial & Physical Resources maintain stock control authorized signatory for bank staff and overtime. Promote excellence and improve standards of nursing care by being involved in audit within the clinical area e.g. infection control audits. Participate in the monitoring of standards and quality of Occupational Health nursing care, through benchmarking, audit and research. Participate in patient and public involvement activities. Promote peoples equality, diversity and rights.
- Education and Development: With the relevant experience act as a supervisor. Develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to development of others. Ensure own compliance with regard to mandatory training and PREP requirements. Develop own skills and knowledge as outlines in the knowledge and skills framework and personal development plan as agreed in an annual professional development review.
- Professional Accountability: Limiting ones actions to those which you feel competent to undertake. Maintain active status on NMC Register. Act in accordance with NMC Code of Conduct and guiding documents. Adhere to Health Board Policies and Procedures.
