Job title: Nursery Manager

Purpose of post:

  1. Ensure all children are safeguarded and their welfare and safety is promoted.
  2. Ensure a high standard of physical, personal, emotional, social and intellectual education and care for all children in the nursery.
  3. Implement high standards of quality practices through supervisions and support for the team members within the nursery.
  4. Day-to-day management of the nursery, including quality improvement, marketing and administration.

Main duties:

  1. Lead the nursery safeguarding procedure to ensure all children are kept safe, well and secure.
  2. Keep up-to-date with relevant safeguarding and child protection training and cascade to staff.
  3. Promote the aims and objectives of the nursery.
  4. Promote the high standards of the nursery at all times to parents, staff and visitors.
  5. Ensure the provision of high standards of physical, personal, social and emotional care.
  6. Lead a team of professional workers and ensure good practice at all times.
  7. Plan and organise staffing schedules and holiday rotas to ensure adequate staffing levels are maintained.
  8. Be aware of and act in accordance with current legislation, good practice, nursery policies and procedures.
  9. Adhere to, and support all team members to understand and follow, the legal requirements of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
  10. Follow all relevant Acts including the Equality Act 2010, the Data Protection Act 2018 and the UK General Data Protection Regulation.
  11. Be responsible for all nursery staff, cook, cleaner, students and voluntary workers.
  12. Supervise and support all members of the nursery team in their day-to-day duties.
  13. Ensure all staff have an up-to-date enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks.
  14. Support all team members to work in partnership with parents/carers and other family members.
  15. Liaise with Ofsted and other professional bodies associated with the nursery.
  16. Oversee the efficient upkeep and maintenance of the building and grounds.
  17. Be responsible for all administrative duties associated with the management of the facility.
  18. Be responsible for the collection, recording and banking of fees together with administering budgets.
  19. Co-ordinate with appropriate agencies regarding trainee placements.
  20. Co-ordinate and chair staff meetings as appropriate.
  21. Establish and maintain effective links with other agencies.
  22. Market and advertise the nursery as necessary.
  23. Develop and implement monitoring and recording systems for child development.
  24. Be responsible for overall health and safety standards within the nursery.
  25. Maintain procedures for high standards of hygiene and cleanliness.
  26. Provide all team members with the support and resources required for early identification and intervention for children with possible special needs.
  27. Report back to the Nursery Directors as required.
  28. Undertake such other duties and responsibilities of an equivalent nature as may be determined from time-to-time by the Nursery Directors.

This job description works alongside those of all other personnel. The Nursery Manager’s key responsibility is to ensure that the staff team are working to their full potential and implement support programmes and training according to individual needs to achieve this.

Job Specification

Job Title: Nursery Manager

Criteria

  1. Essential
  2. Must hold a full and relevant level 3 qualification.
  3. At least 5 years experience in an early years setting or have at least 3 years other suitable experience.
  4. At least 3 years experience in a managerial or supervisory role.
  5. Experience of working in more than one childcare setting.
  6. Experience of delivering training.
  7. Experience of supervising students.
  8. Experience of managing buildings and other resources.
  9. Experience of working with volunteers and/or parents as ‘partners’ in community development.

Training:

  1. First Aid training.
  2. Leadership and Management training.
  3. Child Protection or DSL Training.
  4. Safer Recruitment training.
  5. Any other relevant training courses.

Knowledge and Skills:

  1. Knowledge of Early Years Foundation Stage.
  2. Knowledge, understanding and practical experience of childcare for young children.
  3. Knowledge, understanding and practical experience of child development.
  4. Knowledge of relevant legislation and the ability to develop policies/procedures consistent with legislation.
  5. Able to work independently and to manage own time efficiently.
  6. Ability to supervise.
  7. Up to date awareness of current thinking about the needs and care of young children.
