Role Description

Amateur FA is looking to appoint one Non-Executive Director who will act as the Board Finance Director. We are looking for an individual with skills and experience in leading finance governance at board level, who has a desire to support grassroots football and a safe environment across Amateur FA football.

We are looking for an ambassador for the organisation and act as custodians of the highest standards of integrity and governance. With the development of a new strategy and recent Board review, the Board is constituted of up to 12 members. The Board is led currently by a Chair, supported by a Vice-Chair, CEO, Council appointed Directors and space for at least four Independent Directors.

Role Title: Non-Executive Finance Director
Reports to: Chair of the Board of Directors

Role Purpose

  1. To direct and monitor the business affairs of the Amateur FA by determining the vision, strategy, plans, policies, and financial investment(s) required to achieve the strategic and overall long-term business objectives.
  2. To oversee and monitor the financial planning and performance of the Amateur FA, by analysing its risks.
  3. To maintain constant awareness and oversight of the Amateur FA's financial position and support the executive team to act to prevent problems.
  4. To be an active board member, providing strategic oversight and to constructively challenge and review the Amateur FA strategic plans, budgets and performance.

Location: Wenlock Road, Old Street, London, N1 7SL. Occasional events at Wembley and St George's Park.

Estimated Time Commitment: The role requires a commitment to attend up to 6 Board meetings a year. Meetings are normally held on a Monday at the County Office or online and last in the region of 3 hours. The Finance Director is also required to attend General Meetings and other ad hoc events held within the County.

Remuneration or Expenses: This is a voluntary role which is not accompanied by any financial remuneration. County FA Expenses will be paid in line with the current Expense Policy of the Amateur FA. Travel and accommodation to FA events where The FA has agreed to reimburse County FA Expenses will be paid in line with the current County FA Expense Policy issued by The FA.

Responsibilities

General:

  1. Serve as a Director of the Amateur FA and actively participate in its strategic management.
  2. Execute the responsibilities of a Company Director in accordance with the Companies Act (2006) and other relevant legislation.
  3. Safeguard the interests of the membership and stakeholders of the Amateur FA.
  4. Establish clear objectives to deliver the agreed strategy and business plan and regularly review performance against those objectives.
  5. Ensure the effective implementation of Board decisions by the CEO and staff, holding the CEO to account for the effective management and delivery of the Amateur FA's strategic aims and objectives.
  6. Jointly oversee the management of risk to the Amateur FA, including as a member of its Remuneration Committee and its Audit & Risk Committee.
  7. Develop and maintain an effective corporate governance structure.
  8. Monitor the financial affairs of the Amateur FA and ensure the effective use of Amateur FA finances.
  9. Promote equality of opportunity, respect and inclusion throughout the Amateur FA.
  10. Represent the Amateur FA to partners and stakeholders of the Amateur FA in a professional manner.
  11. Act with discretion in respect of sensitive, confidential, or commercial information provided to you in this role.

Finance:

  1. Oversee all internal and external audit and control decisions to support organisational operations.
  2. Oversee the preparation of timely and detailed Board reports of financial performance and position on quarterly, annual and ad hoc bases.
  3. Provide support to, and act as a sounding board for, the CEO on matters of accountancy, finance and taxation.
  4. Ensure compliance with regulations, statutes and guidelines.
  5. Ensure appropriate financial controls and processes are effective, documented and monitored.
  6. Support the Amateur FA in its strategic decision-making.

Person Specification

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Proven experience as a CFO, Finance Director, Head of Finance or similar role (e.g. Controller aspiring to leadership), in a similar organisation.
  2. Relevant experience of internal and/or external audit.
  3. Board experience in a recognised and/or registered organisation.
  4. Current chartered accountancy qualification or equivalent.
  5. In-depth knowledge of audit, corporate finance and accounting principles, laws and best practices.
  6. Solid knowledge of financial analysis and forecasting.

  1. Possess or show willingness to develop an understanding of grassroots football.
  2. Incisive analytical and rational thinking, with the communication skills to constructively challenge the CEO and Board, in order to ensure that prudent decisions are made.
  3. Positive attitude and highly self-motivated with the ability to motivate others.
  4. Evidence of emotional intelligence and self-awareness.
  5. A strong commitment to promoting and embedding diversity and inclusion at all levels.
