Non-Executive Director – Medical Protection Society

The Medical Protection Society (MPS) is seeking a medically qualified Non-Executive Director (NED) to join its Council. This is a unique opportunity for an experienced clinician to contribute to the strategic oversight of the world’s leading member-owned, not-for-profit protection organisation for healthcare professionals.

About MPS

MPS is the world’s leading member-owned, not-for-profit protection organisation for doctors, dentists, and healthcare professionals.

Founded in 1892, MPS exists to protect and support the professional interests of nearly 300,000 members worldwide, helping them navigate the ongoing challenges of modern medical and dental practice. We operate in the United Kingdom, Ireland, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, the Caribbean, and Bermuda.

MPS’s in-house experts provide assistance with a wide range of legal and ethical challenges, including clinical negligence claims, regulatory inquiries, complaints, disciplinary procedures, and inquests. Beyond crisis support, MPS promotes safe medical and dental practice through risk management initiatives such as workshops, e-learning, clinical risk assessments, and industry advocacy. MPS also actively campaigns for regulatory and legal reforms that benefit members and the broader healthcare profession.

About the Role

As a Non-Executive Director, you will provide strategic oversight and governance, ensuring that MPS continues to protect its members while adapting to the evolving healthcare and regulatory landscape. The Council oversees MPS’s financial health, risk management, and strategic direction, supporting the executive team in delivering the organisation’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

  • Strategic Oversight: Contribute to shaping and evaluating MPS’s long-term strategy, ensuring alignment with its mission and values.
  • Governance and Risk Management: Provide independent challenge and scrutiny of MPS’s risk framework, financial sustainability, and corporate strategy.
  • Financial and Operational Insight: Review and interpret financial reports, budgets, and performance metrics, ensuring the organisation’s fiscal health.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Ensure that the perspectives of MPS members and the wider healthcare community inform decision-making.
  • Committee Participation: Engage in relevant governance committees, overseeing areas such as risk, remuneration, and financial sustainability.
  • Corporate Responsibility: Uphold high ethical standards, ensuring regulatory compliance and promoting best practices in governance.

About You

This is an exciting opportunity for a senior clinician with board-level or committee experience to contribute to MPS’s strategic direction.

We are looking for:

  • A qualified doctor, ideally with recent clinical or academic experience.
  • Board-level or senior committee experience in a public or private healthcare setting.
  • Strong financial and strategic acumen, with experience overseeing budgets and risk management.
  • Familiarity with governance and regulatory frameworks, particularly in healthcare or professional associations.
  • The ability to challenge, support, and collaborate within a high-calibre board.
  • Experience in the private healthcare market would be desirable, but not essential.

Join us in shaping the future of MPS and safeguarding the professional interests of healthcare professionals worldwide.
