Job summary

The NHS trust voted the best to work for anywhere in the Midlands by its own staff is looking to appoint two Non-Executive Directors and one Associate Non-Executive Director to help continue to lead its improvement journey.

Sherwood Forest Hospitals, which serves 350,000 patients in the Mid-Nottinghamshire area, employs more than 5,000 people and hosts more than 380 volunteers across its King's Mill, Mansfield Community and Newark Hospital sites.

The Trust is rated 'Outstanding' for 'Care' by the Care Quality Commission, with its maternity services rated 'Good' and its
King's Mill Hospital remaining the only 'Outstanding' NHS-run acute hospital anywhere in the Midlands.

Sherwood has also proudly been named as the best NHS Trust to work for anywhere in the East and West Midlands by the Trust's own staff every year since 2018 in the NHS National Staff Survey.

Main duties of the job

Following some changes on its Board of Directors, the Trust is looking to appoint to three vital roles to help lead the Trust's continuing improvement journey and help support the delivery of the Trust's five-year Improving Lives strategy.

The Trust is looking to appoint to two Non-Executive Director roles advertised here. These roles are as follows:
  • One financially qualified Non-Executive Director with board-level strategic financial leadership experience, drawn from a track record working in complex highly regulated sector(s).
  • One clinically qualified Non-Executive Director with extensive experience in primary care, secondary care, public health or social care to join the Trust's Quality Committee.

Essential
  • A demonstrable interest in health and social care and a strong desire to achieve the best sustainable outcomes for all patients and service users through encouraging continuous improvement, clinical excellence and value for money.
  • Strong understanding of financial management, with the ability to balance the competing objectives of quality, operational performance and finance.
  • An appreciation of constitutional and regulatory NHS standards.
Desirable
  • Experience of implementing major new digital projects.
  • Knowledge of the financial and operational management of a Private Finance Initiative (PFI) hospital or equivalent.
  • Understanding of the management and delivery of new capital projects.
Setting strategy and delivering long-term transformation

Essential
  • Experience of leading and delivering against long-term vision and strategy.
  • Experience leading transformational change, managing complex organisations, budgets and people.
Promoting equality and inclusion, and reducing health and workforce inequalities

  • A clear commitment towards the achievement of equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • Significant experience of engaging with the diverse social, economic and cultural groups served by the Trust.
Providing robust governance and assurance

Essential
  • Prior board experience (any sector, executive or non-executive role).
  • Evidence of successfully demonstrating the NHS Leadership competencies in other leadership roles.
  • An ability to identify and address issues, including underperformance, and to scrutinise and challenge information effectively for assurance.
Creating a compassionate, just and positive culture

Essential
  • A clear commitment to the NHS and the Trust's values.
  • Experience of building effective teams, encouraging change and innovation and shaping an open, inclusive and compassionate culture through setting the right tone at the top and championing diversity at, and across, all levels.
