Job Purpose

As a Network Asset Engineer (single skilled mechanic) you will be working with a wide range of equipment, implementing an effective and efficient maintenance service on all Wastewater Network Maintenance sites, including pumping stations, powered screens and detention tanks. You will provide a service to internal and external customers to achieve the quality, performance and safety standards of the company.

Job Accountabilities

You will be accountable for carrying out reactive, planned and proactive fault identification, investigation and analysis to establish the root cause of all mechanical issues. You will complete the necessary planned maintenance tasks on Wastewater Network Maintenance assets in order to ensure their reliability and compliance with United Utilities Health and Safety policies and procedures at all times. You will also have accountability for:

  • Assisting the Network Asset Controller and Network Maintainer Controller in reviewing and amending the appropriate telemetry alarm level settings at powered assets, as required.
  • Identifying and raising further work and capital investment needs (through Problem Notes or reactive Plant Failure Reports) required to avoid repeat incidents and failures at powered assets.
  • Responding to reactive incidents e.g. alarms, customer calls and field notifications on standby, and carry out the first call response on all powered assets.
  • Liaising with the Network Asset Controller and Network Maintainer Controller to ensure that all assets at each powered asset/site facility are registered correctly on United Utilities corporate system at all times.
  • Ensuring that all maintenance data recorded is reliable, accurate and complete at all times.
  • Ensuring that all powered assets are compliant with their regulatory Environment Agency (EA) permit conditions at all times.
  • Proactively looking at ways of reducing the number of repeat failures, pollution and/or flooding incidents at powered assets.
  • Acting as the Person Controlling the Works (PCW) for all work (within relevant mechanical or electrical discipline) being completed on site by Framework Contractors, ensuring that the work is completed safely, correctly, on time and within budget.
  • Assisting the Network Asset Controllers and Network Maintainer Controllers in reviewing and updating the ‘Site Contingency Plans', and ensuring that the critical spares for powered assets are available at all times.
Knowledge and Skills

To be successful in this role, you must be a time-served engineer in Mechanical engineering or a relevant mechanical discipline and hold a mechanical qualification NVQ or City and Guilds Level 3 as a minimum requirement. You will also need:

  • To demonstrate basic maintenance understanding of the operation of Wastewater Network Assets, and a general understanding of Wastewater Network activities.
  • Good information technology skills and the ability to understand United Utilities systems and their capabilities and limitations.
  • To be capable of using your own initiative and have a flexible approach to highly varied workloads.
  • Good interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers.

  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Good team working skills.
  • A full UK driving license.
  • A good understanding of Wastewater Network non-infrastructure policies and procedures.
Additional Information
  • The successful candidate will be required to take part in an out of hours standby rota and must be able to respond to call outs within a reasonable time of the initial call.
  • This is a physically demanding role and duties will include climbing ladders, accessing manholes, working at heights, entering confined spaces and may require working off access platforms.
  • While we have highlighted the key skills required to undertake this role, they are not all essential at the outset. A willingness to undertake the necessary training is expected, and appropriate support and development will be provided.

We rely on every employee to ensure our customers receive the best possible service, day in, day out. In return, we ensure that you will be well rewarded for your efforts, from an excellent salary through to development opportunities that will really kick start a thriving career here at UU.
