Job description

University of Oxford
Named Veterinary Surgeon (NVS) or Laboratory Animal Veterinarian

Grade 9 - £55,636 - £64,228 p.a. Plus, exceptional benefits. (more may be available for an outstanding candidate)

Based in Central Oxford, OX1

Vacancy ID: 178552

The University of Oxford is seeking an experienced NVS or laboratory animal veterinarian to join our team of vets at the Department of Biomedical Services for a fixed term of 12 months (maternity cover). This role is suitable for a secondment, with shorter durations considered for the right candidate.

The core purpose of the University of Oxford’s Biomedical Services (BMS) is to provide for the care and welfare of animals in experimental research and advise on their ethical use. In doing so, we support the scientific community across the University.

At BMS, we currently operate an in-house team of 6 vets (5 FTEs): 5 Named Veterinary Surgeons, including an ECLAM resident, and 1 trainee NVS. The veterinary team supports researchers and technical staff by providing veterinary expertise while ensuring that our animal care and practices comply with the legal requirements of the Animal (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA).

The veterinary team supports research over a diverse variety of species, including rhesus macaque, small animal species (mouse, rat, guinea pig, ferret, dwarf hamster), and aquatics (Xenopus, zebrafish, and other fish species). This opportunity could enhance your expertise and career development in fields or species that may be new to you. There is the potential for some flexible working once the applicant is fully trained. Engagement with internal and external CPD opportunities is encouraged. This exciting opportunity comes with an excellent remuneration and benefits package.

If you are committed to supporting animal welfare and the advancement of medical research and want to expand your expertise within a world-leading University, you can find out more by speaking to our Head of Department, James Bussell, who can tell you more about the work we do and the role you could play in delivering that. James can be reached at james.bussell@bms.ox.ac.uk. If you would like to discuss the specifics of the role with one of our current NVSs, please send a request via James.
