Are you a motivated and dedicated professional who is passionate about safeguarding?


We are in a position to recruit 0.8 WTE Named Nurse for Safeguarding Children Team on a 12 month fixed term contract to cover maternity leave within the team. This is a specialist role which involves operating across services for our integrated Acute and Community Trust and working from non NHS Sites.


The successful practitioner will be supported in their role by the wider safeguarding team and there will be opportunity to lead on areas of work /specialist interest in safeguarding and undertake professional studies to aid development.


The post holder will actively contribute to multi-agency partnership working arrangements for safeguarding children, which will include working within the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH).

The post holder will work in a busy and supportive Safeguarding Children Team. The role involves working collaboratively with Named and Designated Doctors, Designated Nurse and other agencies to ensure that the organisation meets its safeguarding children responsibilities and that children are effectively safeguarded.


The post holder will deliver training; safeguarding supervision; undertake research and audits; provide daily expert advice and support to staff within the Trust.


You will need to evidence partnership working and have appropriate post registration experience, which must include extensive clinical experience working with complex safeguarding issues either acute or community based.


The successful candidates will increase their knowledge in different aspects of safeguarding, and as a team we are ready to look at new ideas. For this interesting role you should have excellent interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work effectively and respond appropriately in challenging circumstances. Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300. It provides inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community.


The Role Is Varied And Will Include:

  1. Providing expert advice and support on all aspects of Safeguarding to all clinical areas, departments and employees of Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.
  2. Providing advice (direct and indirect) to colleagues on the assessment, treatment and clinical services for all aspects of Safeguarding.
  3. Providing appropriate professional advice on Safeguarding concerns including within the wider context of child health and social care and contributing to the strategic and ongoing planning of Children’s Services within Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.
  4. Directly supervise staff in accordance with the Walsall Healthcare NHS Safeguarding Supervision Policy, and ensure that whilst working within a cascade model, supervision is robustly monitored to ensure access for staff; additionally ensure quarterly reports are provided to the Lead Nurse.
  5. Working in partnership with the Designated Nurse and Doctor and with the Trust’s Lead Nurse and Named Doctor for Safeguarding in promoting the safeguarding agenda within Walsall.
  6. Providing support and advice to any member of staff who is requested to engage in legal proceedings.
  7. Encouraging and facilitating a culture that involves and empowers staff, stimulating innovation and active participation in shaping service developments for the delivery of patient care.
  8. Ensuring the Trust’s aims and objectives are maintained, engaging when required in groups, forums, meetings as delegated by the Head Nurse for Safeguarding; deputising as necessary in strategic meetings.
  9. Providing cross-cover and support across the Safeguarding Service in line with the post-holder’s professional accountability and expertise.
  10. Ensuring that all data is being monitored in respect of requirements of the Trust Safeguarding Annual Report; provide assurance that systems are robust and that reports can be provided as requested. Ensure that oversight of the Administrative Team exists.
  11. Ensuring that Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust has a training strategy in line with the Intercollegiate Document and local expectations. The post holder will also be required to deliver safeguarding children training.
  12. Ensuring there are robust and up to date local policies and guidelines are available throughout Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust.
  13. Participating in internal serious incidents and child safeguarding practice reviews processes as required. Ensuring dissemination of information post internal serious incidents and child safeguarding practice reviews and application of learning.
  14. Assess the safeguarding risks involved in cases/situations and ensure utilisation of practices and protocols to minimise those risks.
  15. Monitoring safeguarding performance of individuals/teams and with the support of the Lead Nurse to take appropriate actions when standards fall below expected levels.
  16. Act as a visible role model, adhering to expected standards of behaviour, promoting a supportive ethos to empower staff to contribute to the delivery of high quality person-centred care.
  17. Lead by example, developing self and other staff and influencing the way care is provided in a manner that is innovative, open and responds to individual needs in line with the NHS Duty of Candour.
