The Medical Division at Mid Yorkshire Hospitals provides Acute care across the range of medical specialities in a large modern purpose-built hospital in Wakefield, which includes a large Acute Assessment Unit, Acute Elderly Assessment Unit, Coronary Care and Acute (Respiratory) Care Unit. We also provide care for Acute Elderly Admissions and step-down care for patients in a less acute phase of their admission at Dewsbury & District Hospital.

Successful applicants will support the Gastroenterology specialty team in the management of their in-patient & outpatient workload and will participate in the Trust-wide out-of-hours cover across both hospital sites.

The Gastroenterology team operate several clinics, which look at a wide variety of digestive diseases and disorders including:

• Functional bowel disorders
• Liver conditions
• Bowel disease

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the post will include:

1. Provision of care with responsibility for the management of patients with acute and chronic conditions including complex cases.
2. Referral of patients to other specialities as appropriate.
3. Involvement in specialty and cross-specialty multi-disciplinary teams and meetings.
4. Teaching and supervision of junior medical staff and other clinicians as appropriate.
5. Active involvement in audit and clinical governance including service improvement activities.

Job responsibilities

Introduction

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Clinical Fellow in Gastroenterology / Hepatology at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust (MYTT) on a fixed term basis for 12 months.

This post will participate in the cross site senior trainee General Medicine Registrar On-Call rota. Applicants will have the same educational opportunities as other trainees and have protected SDT timetabled.

These posts are not recognised UK training posts. However, the post-holders will have a named supervisor, and be supported in undertaking scheduled educational opportunities within the Trust and specialties.

The Service Role

From a clinical perspective, these posts will participate in the cross site senior trainee rota. The senior trainee rota is compliant with the 2016 junior doctor contract averaging 48 hours per week. The illustrative rota pattern is attached to this job description.

Duties will be based primarily on our Pinderfields Hospital site although all our medical staff are involved in delivering care to patients on all our sites.

Person Specification

Qualifications

• MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
• MRCP(UK) Part 1 at time of application and MRCP(UK) full diploma by the published deadline
• Eligibility for the specialist register in general internal medicine by time of application
• Completion of Irish Basic Specialty Training in medicine and the MRCPI full diploma by time of application
• Progress towards or attainment of Royal College Exams
• ATLS, ALS, APLS or PALS certification
• Higher qualification e.g. MFARM, MRCP, MRCPG, MRCS, FRCA or equivalent
• Demonstrates intelligent and analytical approach to problem solving.
• Good time management and organisational skills.

Personal Attributes

• Possesses good communication skills.
• Demonstrable skills in written and spoken English, adequate to discuss medical topics with patients and colleagues.
• Flexibility and willingness to learn all aspects of hospitals internal systems and processes and adhere to local policies.
• Physically able to carry out the duties as specified in the job description and ability to evidence competencies.
• Disclosure + Barring Service (DBS) Clearance.
• Ability to contribute to the development of the Trust, the Unit and its services.
• Evidence of multidisciplinary collaboration.
• Specific educational interests and evidence of educational ideas or initiatives.

Experience

• Evidence of achievement of foundation competences from a UKFPO-affiliated foundation programme or equivalent.
• Evidence of achievement of Internal Medicine Stage 1 capabilities.
• Have at least 36 months experience in medical specialties (of which at least 18 months must include the care of acute medical inpatients).
