Job Title: Mulliner Production & Inspection Engineer
Location: Crewe, Cheshire
Department: Mulliner Workshop
Reports To: Mulliner Quality Manager



About the Role

An exciting opportunity is available for a skilled Production & Inspection Engineer to join a specialist team working on bespoke and low-volume luxury vehicle projects. The successful candidate will be responsible for planning and managing production quality processes, conducting vehicle inspections, and ensuring cosmetic, functional, and dimensional quality standards are met. The role also supports concept development, design reviews, and acts as deputy to the Quality Technical Manager in technical meetings and senior reviews.


Key Responsibilities

  • Audit Planning & Management

    • Lead and manage the audit plan across all models.

    • Conduct feedback sessions and ensure clear ownership of audit issues.

    • Drive resolution and continuous improvement in quality performance.

    • Act as escalation point and arbitrator for unresolved issues.

  • Vehicle & Process Inspection

    • Carry out detailed product audits throughout build, shakedown, and pre-sale phases.

    • Validate and report results in audit systems and escalate issues where needed.

    • Approve vehicle quality in pre-series phases and contribute to gateway approvals.

  • Design & Process Improvement Feedback

    • Attend design reviews to offer audit insights and prevent future quality issues.

    • Provide feedback to design and production teams on process success and optimisation.

    • Present audit data and quality trends in senior-level meetings.

  • Receiving & Parts Inspection

    • Inspect parts and assemblies received from internal and external suppliers.

    • Conduct audits at supplier sites (UK & EU) when required.

    • Lead defect "levelling" processes and coordinate part rejection and replacement.


Skills & Experience

  • Significant experience in vehicle product inspection, ideally in paint, trim, or assembly.

  • In-depth technical knowledge of vehicle construction and production environments.

  • Excellent communication skills across all levels of an organisation.

  • Strong decision-making ability under pressure and in conflict scenarios.

  • Previous exposure to different manufacturing environments is highly desirable.

  • Working knowledge of audit processes and continuous improvement methodologies.

  • German language skills are a plus.


Technical Knowledge

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting engineering drawings.

  • Strong colour differentiation abilities (Munsell test compliant).

  • Skilled in applying defect severity ratings per quality audit guidelines.

  • Competent in MS Office applications, especially Excel, Word, and Access.

  • Clean, full driving licence required; advanced driving skills desirable.

  • Experience with audit data systems and analysis preferred.


Qualifications

  • Higher National Diploma (HND) or equivalent technical qualification.

  • Consideration will also be given to candidates with significant, relevant hands-on experience in vehicle inspection and quality assurance.


Health & Safety

  • Responsible for maintaining and adhering to all relevant site Health & Safety standards.

  • Ensures safety practices are upheld within audit, inspection, and production areas.
