We would like to recruit highly motivated band 6 Midwives to lead the Young Parent Maternity Service within our welcoming, supportive and friendly Enhanced Support Midwifery team. This will involve working across central Lancashire with young people and their families. The role is a fixed term contract for a period of twelve months.
You will provide antenatal and postnatal continuity of carer to young people and act as an advocate for young people and their families to coordinate care based on their individual needs optimising mental as well as physical health.
You will work in partnership with a multi-agency and multi-disciplinary team from midwifery, health and social care to provide and co-ordinate the highest standards of care for young people and their families some of whom may have complex social issues.

Main duties of the job
- You will perform a key role within the enhanced support midwifery team, acting as the link between the maternity service and other healthcare, educational and support services involved in the young person's care planning.
- You will work closely with the enhanced support midwifery team to ensure maternity care is responsive to the young person's needs.
- You will work autonomously, being responsible for managing a caseload and ensure young people are referred appropriately and properly safeguarded.
- You will have a sound based knowledge and act as a resource to colleagues to enable them to provide holistic care that optimises the health and wellbeing of young people and their families with/without complex social needs including mental health issues.
Job responsibilities
- Communicate effectively with young people and their families to provide informed choice and personalisation, recording agreed care plans in their electronic patient record.
- You will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team to provide individualised plans of care for young people and their families.
- You will develop and deliver training with the support of the specialist midwives, being knowledgeable and supportive of the continuity of carer national agenda.
- You will work in partnership with a multi-agency and multi-disciplinary team from health and social work to provide high standards of care for young people with varied complex social needs.
- You will act at all times in a manner that upholds the Trust's values and Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework goals, working as part of a team to ensure that women and relatives receive excellent care with compassion.
- You will participate in data collection to demonstrate the positive impacts of continuity of carer for young people in improving health and pregnancy outcomes.
Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
- Registered midwife with valid NMC registration
- Degree
- Ability to perform Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE)
Knowledge & Experience
- Completed preceptorship programme and achieved band 6
- Experience of MDT working.
- Knowledge of Clinical Governance and the relevance to practice
- Knowledge and understanding of the additional support which is required to optimise outcomes and experience for young parents
- Able to manage/treat obstetric emergencies in hospital/birth unit and community setting confidently
- Ability to deal with difficult and sensitive situations with tact, diplomacy and professionalism.
- Experience at band 6 Forward thinking 'can do' approach level or completed band 5 preceptorship
- Sensitive and kind manner.
- Self-motivated and keen to work autonomously.
- Experience of delivering antenatal and postnatal care
- Experience of continuity of carer.
- Experience of working in a variety of maternity settings/environments
- Experience of working with people with mental health issues and/or young people
- Experience of child protection conferences, MARAC, strategy meetings, planning meetings, core group meetings and substance misuse meetings with local partners
- Experience in developing and delivering training
- Experience of implementing changes and service developments
