Job summary

We are excited to offer a fantastic opportunity to join our Community Occupational Therapy Team in North Shropshire CMHS as a Band 6 Occupational Therapist.

You will work as part of our team of experienced Occupational Therapists, Assistant Practitioners and Assistants to provide multidisciplinary services to adults with a range of conditions in their own homes.

Main duties of the job

As a Band 6 OT you will be expected to assess and provide treatment for adults with multiple and complex mental health needs working alongside the MDT to ensure high quality care. You will need to be flexible and able to work in a variety of locations within a large geographical area, across North Shropshire assessing adults in their own homes.

Post graduate experience of working with adults where their primary need is relating to a mental health condition is essential together sound clinical knowledge of how an individual's mental health can impact on functioning.

You will be willing to support student education and development, and share your experiences and knowledge with others in the service and external partners.

Key skills and experience:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and experience of working in a team
  • A sound understanding of assessment and rehabilitation
  • Registered with the Health Care Professions Council
  • Have a genuine passion for working with adults with a variety of health needs and committed to providing evidence based patient care.
  • Extensive experience of working with people who have Severe & Enduring Mental Health Needs.
  • Be able to work well in a team and wider MDT
  • Clean driving licence and access to a car for work purposes.
  • Be flexible and adaptable
  • Experience of supervising a range of staff (formally and informally)

Job responsibilities

Working in a team and in partnership with the wider MDT you will provide specialist assessment and care planning in conjunction with service users and carers to:

  • Promote independence/self-management, increased functional ability and maintaining safety
  • Improve health and wellbeing including mental health
  • To provide illness /condition specific interventions
  • Prevent and reduce health inequalities
  • Support with admission avoidance and early supported discharge
  • Be competent as appropriate to the requirements of the role.
  • Putting people at the heart of what we do, empowering people to improve care and wellbeing, delivering better health, better care in partnership.
  • Be a Specialist Occupational Therapist and have a detailed professional and clinical knowledge. They will be a specialist practitioner and have a focus in Community Occupational therapy.
  • Be responsible for a defined population of service users in a variety of settings across the Partnership Trust in the community setting
  • Have supervisory, training and leadership responsibilities where appropriate and will have some responsibility for team performance and service developments/improvements.
  • Demonstrate initiative and be creative in finding solutions to problems.
  • Work with the team leader undertaking delegated tasks in team management.

Person Specification

Qualifications & Training Essential

  • Degree in Occupational Therapy or equivalent
  • Registration with HCPC
  • Post qualification courses in working with older people and people with physical disabilities
  • Attendance at relevant clinical networks or Special Interest Groups
  • Up to date field work/pre-registration student training

Desirable

  • Modules at Masters level
  • Evidence of further clinical study
  • APPLE accreditation
  • Leadership experience/qualification
  • Membership of BAOT/COT

Experience Essential

  • Relevant experience to the role including assessment and interventions for a wide range of disabilities
  • Supporting service users, families and carers in dealing with the impact of disability and life limiting conditions
  • Ability to manage time and caseload effectively
  • Working in a multidisciplinary team

Desirable

  • Experience of using standardised assessments and outcome measures
  • Experience of negotiation and conflict management in clinical situations
