Doncaster & Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS FT

The division of Surgery and Cancer would like to invite applicants for a Band 3 post to join the Medical Secretary team within Breast Department at Doncaster Royal Infirmary.

There is one position available for 22.5 hours, the post is to support Consultant surgeons.

They will need experience in managing the robust systems in place for the administrative engagement of patient pathways. They will need to be able to work flexibly as part of the team - sometimes across sites - to produce clinical correspondence using Medisec digital transcription software from outpatient and inpatient attendances.

Experience in using the PTL (Patient Tracker List) to manage patient's pathway is paramount. A knowledge of medical terminology alongside previous experience of working in a clerical / secretarial role is desirable.

You will be required to display tact and diplomacy, and have developed communication skills when dealing with senior staff, patients, colleagues and the general public.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support named clinicians and support their colleagues to provide an efficient support to all members of the clinical teams.

We are a very busy and friendly team and are now looking to engage an experienced Medical Secretary with excellent typing and interpersonal skills to take on this very busy and varied post. The successful applicant will become an integral part of an efficient team providing an excellent secretarial and support service. The post will be based at Doncaster Royal Infirmary, but may be required to work at Bassetlaw Hospital if service needs arise.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

  • Previous experience working in a clerical/administrative role
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Demonstrable working knowledge of Microsoft packages including Word
  • Customer care experience
  • Ability to work to and promote Standard Operating producers / performance targets
  • Experience of working within a busy/demanding environment e.g. multi-disciplinary team
  • Fully conversant with all waiting list functions on PAS and the ability to action these independently
  • Thorough knowledge of healthcare system and processes
  • Understanding of Primary Care, GP and community services
  • Knowledge of Referral to Treatment Patient Access policies and procedures
  • Understanding of patient priorities and targets in relation to appointments and waiting times, specifically referral to treatment

Qualifications/Training

  • Minimum of 3 GCSE's including English and Maths at Grade C or above or suitable equivalent qualification or experience
  • Business Administration Level II Apprenticeship
  • ECDL or equivalent / demonstrable experience
