Job description

Applications are invited for the post of Medical Education and Simulation Fellow.

This twelve month post offers an exciting opportunity for the appointee to develop experience and skills as a Medical Educator. The role is ideal for a doctor who has experience of working within simulation and delivering quality improvement.

The role supports creating, delivering and analysing simulation programmes and Quality Improvement work within Medical Education.

Main duties of the job
  1. Work closely with the Simulation Team, to be responsible for the design and delivery of high-quality simulation-based education for undergraduate medical students, postgraduate doctors-in-training and the wider multidisciplinary team.
  2. Work effectively within the Simulation Team to ensure the delivery of simulation programmes in a variety of locations, this would include (but is not limited to) external locations and in situ simulation on wards/departments within the Trust.
  3. Liaise with senior colleagues across the Trust to design and deliver high-quality educational interventions focusing on both technical and non-technical skills for evidence-based healthcare.
  4. Utilise technology-enabled learning approaches (VLEs/audiovisual modalities) to enhance accessibility to learning opportunities.
  5. Participate in the evaluation and quality improvement of simulation-based educational activities to ensure trainees' needs are continually met.
  6. Assist in the delivery of the Trust medical induction to resident doctors commencing in the Trust.
  7. Undertake QI in medical education and aim to present projects through publication and/or presentation at meetings, symposia, and conferences.
  8. Ensure the simulation centre is represented within the South London Simulation Network by attendance at meetings, symposia, and conferences.

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Full GMC registration with license to practice.
  • Formal Teaching Qualification (PGCE or equivalent).
  • Simulation Instructor 'Train the Trainers' course or similar.
  • Instructor Potential nomination or Full Instructor Status on RC(UK) or ALSG approved courses.
Clinical & Technical Experience
  • Completion of NHS Foundation Programme Training.
  • At least 12 months worked in the UK as a fully registered medical practitioner.
  • Evidence of prior experience of quality improvement/audit/research.
  • Completion of core training examinations (where appropriate).
Teaching Attributes
  • Experience of medical simulation as a candidate.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of principles of adult education.
  • Is self-reflective and open to peer-review.
  • Experience of medical simulation as an instructor.
  • Evidence of previous involvement in medical education or teaching or instructing role.
  • Prior experience of working with education technologies e.g., human patient simulators/virtual learning environments/audio-visual packages.
Organisation & planning
  • Able to work flexibly in a small team as well as independently.
  • Able to juggle service demands by setting priorities & planning effectively.
Communication & Interpersonal skills
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with a range of different people.
  • Evidence of previous publications/presentations.
