The role

Are you a Mechanical Engineer seeking a fulfilling career that utilises your expertise and promises personal development, along with the opportunity to work on large-scale and sustainable projects? If so, United Utilities (UU) has an exciting opportunity for you to join our Engineering Delivery team in a pivotal role that will help ensure the successful realisation of our strategic goals in the North West of England.

As a Mechanical Engineer, you will design and develop mechanical equipment for water and wastewater systems, both at process sites and within natural water networks. Reporting to a Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will collaborate with County Engineering Managers, the UU Design Function, and Project Engineers. Building strong relationships with internal clients and external partners is key.

As a Subject Matter Expert (SME), you will address unique engineering challenges and provide design and technical advice across United Utilities (UU). Your role includes supporting the capital programme, offering operational engineering support, and conducting studies and investigations. You will manage projects involving data analysis, design, document preparation, and proposal reviews.

Your contributions will be vital as we move towards a self-reliant design approach, enhancing our operational excellence and strategic vision. This role offers a comprehensive view of our operations and the chance to shape the future of our Capital Delivery Programmes, helping UU achieve its ambitious goals.

In-person site attendance in Lingley Mere, Warrington is required three days per week to promote the benefits of face-to-face collaboration, alongside some travel to operational sites in the North West and flexible hours to support work-life balance. Initially, you may be expected to attend more frequently to familiarise yourselves with the site, the team, and your role.

Key accountabilities

  1. Oversee mechanical engineering projects, ensuring alignment with milestones, budget, and United Utilities' standards.
  2. Develop and verify design documents, supporting operational efficiency and compliance.
  3. Champion safety, implementing best practices throughout project lifecycles.
  4. Contribute to United Utilities' Engineering Standards, providing expert design input.
  5. Achieve annual engineering targets, optimizing resource allocation and project outcomes.

Skills & experience

To be successful with your application, you’ll need to show that you meet the following essential criteria:

  1. Qualified to degree/HND or equivalent level or have equivalent skills, knowledge and experience.
  2. Experience of providing technical advice, influencing and directing the delivery of successful engineering outcomes.
  3. Experience producing, understanding and providing critical appraisals of proposed designs and proposed engineering designs and/or demonstrable experience producing, understanding and providing mechanical engineering designs and solutions.
  4. Hold a current Full UK driving licence.
