Job description

Job Description Summary

GE applies the science and systems of power conversion to help drive the electric transformation of the world's energy infrastructure. Designing and delivering advanced motor, drive and control technologies, we serve specialized sectors such as marine, industry, energy and all related services.

We are looking for a lead mechanical engineer to work in the Naval equipment design team within our systems engineering organisation in Rugby. You will be responsible for developing our next generation of electrical drives and distribution equipment for Naval and Marine applications. You will be involved at all stages of the product development process from concept to manufacturing, collaborating with Project Managers, Technical Leads, and the power systems and power electronics teams to deliver on customer requirements.

Due to the security restrictions on this role, applications will only be accepted from UK Nationals who either hold, or are eligible for SC security clearance.

Roles And Responsibilities

  • Develop innovative mechanical designs for power electronics and electrical distribution equipment with challenging requirements for performance, reliability, cost and manufacturability. Create 3D CAD models and 2D drawings in PTC Creo and create and manage parts and BoMs in Siemens Teamcenter PLM system.
  • Perform engineering analyses using a combination of hand calculations and software tools.
  • Develop test plans and support physical testing of prototypes to validate your designs.
  • Collaborate with the product and project managers to set priorities, manage base cost, and effectively allocate resources per programs and projects requirement. Maintain an appropriate operating rhythm; driving simplification, efficiency, productivity, and overall team performance.
  • Responsible for use of engineering tools and processes to optimise engineering throughput and quality, and for ensuring that DFMA techniques are implemented in the design process.
  • Act as a technical point of contact for all mechanical engineering topics related to project work.

Essential Requirements

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent, or relevant experience in a mechanical design engineering environment.
  • Significant engineering experience with good technical knowledge of manufacturing processes, sheetmetal design, DFMA and material selection.
  • Expertise in stress, thermal and fluid flow analyses using a combination of hand calculations, and FEA software tools such as ANSYS and Fluent.
  • A strong track record in product development, ideally gained in the industrial or electrical equipment sectors.
  • The ability to interpret electrical schematics and use them to develop suitable mechanical designs.
  • Demonstrable experience in a project lead role.
  • Proficiency in the use of PTC Creo, or similar 3D CAD software for the creation of 3D part and assembly models and 2D drawings.
  • Good engineering, communication, and organisational skills.
  • You must be a sole UK National and hold or be eligible to obtain UK security clearance to SC level.

You can expect from us

  • Challenging and exciting projects.
  • A work environment where we understand that not everyone has the same expectations about their jobs, careers and work-life balance and we are happy to discuss flexibility requirements.
  • Attractive compensation.
  • Flexible benefits so you can build a package that fits your personal needs. Some core benefits are: Employer pension contribution (not subject to individual contribution), Income protection, Private Health Insurance and Life Assurance.
  • 26 days vacation + bank holidays.
