Job description

James Paget University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Cancer Services Team for a 12-month Fixed Term Band 4 Multi-Disciplinary Team Coordinator.

Main duties of the job

You will be required to work closely with clinicians, specialist nurses, secretaries, and all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Teams (MDT) and associated departments, to ensure that patients on a cancer pathway are proactively managed throughout their pathway in a timely manner.

You will coordinate the patient journey from referral, through diagnostics, treatment planning, and treatment, highlighting any potential delays in the pathway promptly.

Previous experience of working within an MDT Coordinator or Patient Pathway Coordinator role, alongside an in-depth knowledge of Cancer targets is essential for this role.

Candidates must have excellent organisational, communication, and interpersonal skills and possess the ability to have difficult conversations in challenging environments.

About us

The majority of the Cancer Services Team is located in the Southside building, adjoining the main hospital complex and consists of 9 bodysites and approximately 20 staff members.

An MDT Coordinator's ethos will:

  • Have great attention to detail.
  • Be methodical in their work approach.
  • Be able to work well under pressure to dedicated timelines, alongside both local and national targets.
  • Have extremely high-quality data entry to support reports submitted to NHS England.

Job responsibilities

The post-holder will coordinate all aspects of the patient pathway and be responsible for prioritising work, reviewing work practices, setting up, managing, and ensuring effective running of Multi-Disciplinary Team (MDT) meetings. In addition, the MDT Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring all cancer patients are monitored and tracked, maintaining the Somerset Cancer Register (SCR) database and ensuring information is communicated to the appropriate clinical and administrative staff within the Trust.

The post-holder will highlight relevant patients for discussion at the MDT meeting with the clinical teams. The Multi-Disciplinary Team Coordinator (MDTC) will provide a comprehensive administrative service to support and cover MDTs and Patient Pathway Coordinators (PPC) to ensure the effective management of accurate and timely data to enable clinical decision-making at MDT meetings when required.

The post-holder will coordinate, proactively manage, and track patients against the National Cancer Waiting (CWT) Times Standards. They will escalate issues to the Cancer Services Management Team in a timely manner so that remedial action can be taken where necessary to ensure the CWT targets are met. They will take responsibility for accurate data collection and entry onto the SCR system ready for submissions in accordance with local and national requirements, i.e., CWT, Cancer Outcomes and Services Dataset (COSD), and other national audits. In collaboration with the Clinical Lead for the body site, the post-holder will work closely with members of the Cancer team and with other MDT Coordinators and PPCs across the Trust in developing policies and procedures that ensure seamless management of Cancer patients in all specialties.

The MDT Coordinator will be a member of the cancer services team, supporting the streamlined pathway of cancer patients through the trust. You will be required to work closely with clinicians, specialist nurses, secretaries, and all members of the Multi-Disciplinary team and associated departments, to ensure that patients on cancer pathways are proactively managed along their pathway within time constraints.
