About the role (External)
Are you interested in starting a career that helps keep the railway greener and more sustainable?
Over 500 miles of used rail, 800 switches and crossings and 50,000 tonnes of contaminated ballast will be processed at our recycling centres each year. Recycling just the ballast will remove more than 2,500 lorry journeys from our roads and save Network Rail around 5m in landfill tax each year.
Our recycling centres are at the heart of our efforts to drive down the cost of Britain's railways and make the industry more sustainable. Rail travel is the greenest form of public transport so Network Rail must take the lead in making our industry greener still.
Each year around 650,000 used concrete sleepers are returned to depots. Around 130,000 of these are able to be re-used on the railway, with the rest sold or crushed to create recycled concrete and a commercial recycled steel product. This role is a great opportunity to start your career with Network Rail, you will be responsible for driving and contributing to your own development which will ensure you are a successful and valued member of the team.
As a MHD (Materials Handling Depot) Operative you will carry out work safely and in accordance with the safe systems of work procedures, method statements or other instructions.
You will be responsible for checking tools, equipment, and materials under your control, this will be involved checking they are fit for use and storing/disposing of them correctly.
Once fully trained and competent you will be expected to undertake associated duties at site ensuring you are working safely and efficiently.
