Job description

About Be the Business:

Be the Business is an independent charity set up to help improve the productivity of small businesses in the UK. We’ve already achieved a £500m improvement in the productivity of the firms we have worked with.

We work with the entire business community, sharing what works for today’s best businesses with any company that wants to learn and improve. As our chair, Sir Charlie Mayfield says, “Boosting productivity is the greatest economic challenge of our generation and is the route to economic growth and improved standards of living.”

More details about Be the Business can be found on our website.

Be the Business Team:

You will join a cross-functional team in building and managing our community: the recruitment of small businesses into our network, and managing communication and engagement with those businesses. You will also be involved in outreach activity to potential corporate partners, who might want to work with us to support that community of small businesses.

Key Duties:

  1. Community Engagement & Support – Manage and engage community members by responding to emails, calls, and online interactions, ensuring timely support and action on call-to-actions.
  2. Online Communication – Deliver high-quality written messaging across digital and social media channels, adapting tone and voice to suit different audiences while following platform guidelines.
  3. Community Activity & Events – Support the logistics of online and in-person events, moderate online forums, manage WhatsApp group activity, and drive engagement through discussions and content creation.
  4. Moderation & Risk Management – Monitor and guide discussions, oversee member communications, assess risks or opportunities for brand reputation, and take swift action when necessary.
  5. Social Media & Content Management – Create, schedule, and manage social media posts, particularly on LinkedIn, using content management systems to align with the communication strategy.
  6. Data Analysis & Reporting – Track engagement and recruitment activity through Salesforce, analyse data from community interactions, and generate reports for internal use and strategic decisions.
  7. Recruitment & Outreach – Identify and recruit small businesses to initiatives through LinkedIn, Eventbrite, and other platforms, while coordinating internal support to drive participation.
  8. Marketing & Admin Support – Assist with communication strategies, create materials using Canva and PowerPoint, liaise with external branding/design agencies, and support wider innovation and programme work.

What Qualities and skills does the role require?

  1. Self-motivated & Adaptable – Works autonomously in a fast-paced environment, stays calm under pressure, and responds well to feedback.
  2. Empathetic & People-Focused – Builds strong relationships, engages diverse stakeholders, and fosters community connections.
  3. Organised & Detail-Oriented – Reliable, professional, and ensures accuracy in all tasks.
  4. Purpose-Driven & Innovative – Passionate about contributing ideas and driving community growth.
  5. Community & Social Media Engagement – Develops stakeholder relationships and drives interaction across digital and in-person channels.
  6. Positive & Flexible – Maintains a friendly, adaptable, and proactive approach to challenges.

Entry Requirements:

  1. 3 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 4+ (A-C) in any subject.
  2. GCSE Maths and English (or equivalents) at grades 3+ (D or above).
  3. Prospective apprentices must not hold an existing qualification at the same or higher level as this apprenticeship in a similar subject.

You may also have a combination of qualifications and experience which demonstrate the minimum foundation needed for the programme. In this instance, you could still be considered for the programme.

If you hold international equivalents of the above qualifications, at the time of your application you must be able to provide an official document that states how your international qualifications compare to the UK qualifications.

For more information please visit the UK ENIC website.

What can we offer?

  1. We're pretty progressive when it comes to working patterns and locations. This is a hybrid role where you will be expected to work from home - though we do ask all our colleagues to be in the office near the Barbican, London, once per month on a Wednesday.
  2. We provide 30 days holiday, plus bank holidays (pro-rated for part time).
  3. We have a 35 hour work week.
  4. A supportive work environment.

Future Prospects:

Upon completion of the apprenticeship we will evaluate your role with the potential to be kept on as a permanent employee.
