Here at Serco, we are seeking an experienced and driven HSEQ Specialist to be part of our dynamic Maritime Safety & Compliance team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the success and safety of our complex maritime contracts, ensuring both health & safety and environmental standards are met to the highest level.

As the Marine HSEQ Superintendent you will work closely with the Head of Service Delivery and Head of Maritime Safety (Designated Person Ashore) to support the management of maritime contracts. Your key focus will be support and advising on health & safety and environmental practices across both afloat and shore-based operations.

To support the maritime contracts with their legal and general obligations with regards to health and safety. The marine contracts are a complex mix of ISO standards and merchant shipping regulations which requires specialist and relevant HSEQ knowledge in order to link the legislative systems ensuring safe systems of work for sea and shore staff, effective risk analysis and thorough incident investigation and subsequent reporting.


As part of this you'll:

  • Strategic Leadership: Drive operational efficiency and ensure continuous improvement across the business, particularly in HSEQ practices, while supporting the implementation of maritime safety strategies.
  • Growth & Financials: Provide subject matter expertise in marine contracts to support business growth, ensuring compliance with HSEQ standards.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Work with internal and external teams to ensure maritime operations meet all regulatory and legislative requirements. You'll liaise with key bodies such as HSE, MCA, MOD and MAIB to stay ahead of the curve.
  • Safety & Risk Management: Lead investigations into accidents, incidents, and near misses. Provide detailed reports and insights into safety trends, and advise on safety culture improvements.
  • Training & Development: Deliver training in HSEQ for both maritime contracts and the wider business, ensuring all staff are equipped to meet health, safety, and environmental requirements.
  • Audit & Assurance: Be part of the audit team, conducting internal and external audits, including for port audits, vessel audits, and contractor due diligence all in line with Serco's 3 lines of Defence Assurance model.
  • Operational Support: Provide subject matter expertise in completion and review of risk assessments supporting safety case and vessel operating processes. This includes various associated trials. Taking the lead in matters pertaining to HSEQ Compliance and a supporting role with broader Company and Maritime Regulatory Requirements primarily in support of base services but also with our afloat communities.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with marine superintendents, port management, and colleagues to support the development of safety procedures, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.

What you'll need to do the role:

Essential:

  • Minimum Level 6 in Occupational Health & Safety
  • IOSH/IIRSM or equivalent membership
  • Experience in ISO/ISM auditing
  • Experience in risk assessment, safe system of work development, and incident investigations

Desirable:

  • Food Safety Level 3 or higher qualification
  • Trained trainer qualification
  • Level 3 in Fire Safety & Risk Management
  • Foundation Certificate in Environmental Management
  • Lead Auditor qualification
  • Accident Investigation training
