This role sits within Doctors.net.uk, a subsidiary of M3 Inc. Doctors.net.uk is the UK's largest professional network of doctors; a closed community used by over 50,000 doctors daily and with a total membership of over 259,000. Products range from a trusted email communications platform to robust news and educational web pages along with our world-class sponsored pharmaceutical content and doctors’ own user-generated content. Our mission is to continually improve these offerings as well as identifying new ways to support our community of doctors throughout their careers.

Job Description

As a Managing Editor at Doctors.net.uk, you will occupy a key, varied role within the Community team, working across News, Analysis, Opinion and Careers content to engage Doctors.net.uk’s membership of over 250,000 GMC-registered doctors, medical students and international medical graduates (IMGs).

You will be involved in shaping the content strategy and KPIs, overseeing the delivery of the editorial content pipeline to deadline and budget, as well as being responsible for content partnerships and the editorial house style and standards. You will help the Marketing team to curate and optimise content-led engagement tactics such as emails, and work alongside the Product team to deliver improvements to site presentation and functionality around content. You will also line manage the News and Features Writer role within the team.

The Doctors.net.uk offices are based near Didcot, Oxfordshire. We generally work to a hybrid pattern of 1 day in office, 4 days working from home, although there can be flexibility.

Responsibilities include:

Strategy
  • Develop and deliver editorial content strategy to meet KPIs
  • Analyse editorial content performance and report to senior colleagues and wider team
  • Analyse member needs, business priorities, audience trends, competitors and market gaps
  • Work with Data team to develop insightful analytics dashboards
  • Manage content budget to deliver ROI
Content Development
  • Keep abreast of developments in UK/ international medicine, NHS, health policy, public health and medical science
  • Commission analysis/ feature, opinion and careers articles
  • Generate regular ideas for news and longer-form content
  • Oversee editorial planning and schedules, assign work and ensure content is published to deadline
  • Edit and proofread content from internal team and freelancers
  • Develop new content formats and optimise existing ones
  • Ensure content adheres to best practice in media law and ethics, liaising with legal adviser where necessary
  • Write articles from time to time
  • Manage the daily news service during the News Editor’s annual leave and other periods of absence
  • Own and develop house style and editorial standards
  • Upload and manage content in CMS, organising appropriate, high-quality images and video
  • Develop and manage content partnerships
  • Recruit and manage authors/contributors and network of freelance journalists
  • Act as content adviser to rest of Community team
Marketing and Promotion
  • Curate and check content-led emails
  • Develop and deliver SEO tactics
  • Work with marketing team on email optimisation and other promotional tactics
  • Write promotional copy for emails, homepage and site sections
Product
  • Request improvements to site presentation and functionality around content
  • Provide content expertise for website projects
  • Liaise with Product and Development teams
Line Management
  • Line manage News and Features Writer
  • Conduct regular 1-2-1s
  • Set objectives and perform annual appraisals
Qualifications
  • Qualification in journalism highly desirable
  • Training in media law including defamation, copyright, privacy, data protection and ethics
  • An understanding of the healthcare and NHS landscape and key topics affecting doctors
  • At least 5 years’ experience of editorial content production or news reporting
  • Ability to write engaging and accurate articles
  • First-class copy-editing and proofreading skills
  • Experience managing busy content schedules
  • Exceptional prioritisation and time management skills
  • Excellent verbal communication and teamworking skills
  • Confidence in working with internal and external stakeholders
  • Line management experience desirable
  • Experience of healthcare journalism desirable
