Job description

We are looking to appoint a Managing Director to join our team at Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust. The successful candidate will have significant experience of working in a Board level position in an NHS acute Trust with a strong track record of operational delivery.


Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is part of a group with The Royal Wolverhampton NHS Trust, with a combined turnover over £1.4 billion. The Trust employs circa 5,000 staff and has a turnover of c£435m.


This is a voting board level position accountable to the Group Chief Executive, leading the Hospital Management Team.

Responsibilities

The Managing Director will be responsible for the daily and operational delivery of the Trust's annual operating plan and will be accountable for leading the Trust's transformation journey as we look to deliver our strategic objectives. Leading the hospital management team (HMT), the role will ensure the delivery of exceptional patient care that is tailored to the needs of our local populations by enabling our teams and leaders to:

  1. Feel empowered to make the right decisions for their populations, giving staff and people a sense of connection and belonging to their local hospital.
  2. Have the operational control of service delivery, so that teams own the end-to-patient pathway, working with clinical groups within the hospital and across the Group to resolve issues and create opportunities for excellent patient care.
  3. Work effectively with local stakeholders to enable care reforms at a neighborhood and locality level.

The Managing Director will ensure the HMT has a presence within the hospital and is known as being a strong positive representation of the Group's vision and values by creating a culture which fosters accountability, teamwork, lifelong learning, service improvement and equality, diversity and inclusion, demonstrating this through personal example.


The post holder will work with local stakeholders in and outside the hospital, including Clinicians, Advisory Boards, Primary Care Networks, Community Services, Group Support Services and Group Clinical Support Services.


Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is an integrated Trust and the only provider of NHS acute care in Walsall, serving a population of 284,300, providing inpatient and outpatient services at the Manor Hospital as well as a wide range of services in the community. Walsall Manor houses the full range of district general hospital services under one roof. The £170 million development was completed in 2010 and the continued upgrading of existing areas ensures the Trust now has a state-of-the-art Critical Care Unit, Neonatal Unit, Obstetric Theatre, and Integrated Assessment Unit facilities.


A new Urgent Emergency Care Centre was opened in March 2023. The two-storey development has significantly improved emergency care facilities and capacity and has provided almost 5,000 square metres of additional clinical space.
