The Shipping Team is a stand-alone profit centre and service provider for ocean freight services within Anglo American Marketing.
As part of its role, Shipping is the in house ocean freight service provider for the Marketing Business, services which includes, but are not limited to commercial freight provision, technical operations, safety and regulatory support and market information. Shipping leverages off the Anglo American cargo base to generate additional earnings from ocean freight activity by engaging in third party freight activity. Using global scale and strength, the team aims to optimise the marine activities and provide safe, reliable, sustainable and competitive freight to the commodity businesses, their customers and further into Shipping's own customer base.
Job Description
PURPOSE
Responsible for leading and executing the physical freight chartering strategy and the scheduling and operations activities associated with the minor bulk portion of the Anglo American Shipping portfolio in the Atlantic Region.
KEY TASKS
- Leadership
- Effectively manage and support the personal and professional development of direct reports and ensure team achievement of agreed business targets.
- Initiate working relationships beyond immediate team, fostering cross-commodity collaboration and synergies for the Marketing BU.
- Lead by example to embed the Marketing behaviors as the way the Marketing BU works together.
Commercial Operations - Minor Bulk (Atlantic)- Conduct short term and spot chartering for Shipping's dry bulk freight activities in accordance with Group policy and procedures.
- Responsible for daily chartering of dry bulk vessels on period and TCT basis;
- Negotiate and achieve freight targets with outside counterparties.
- Closely monitor freight markets at all times of day and collect current fixture information;
- Utilise technical freight knowledge to provide voyage calculations and assessments of the dry bulk freight market as requested;
- Capable of managing parcelling considerations and the relevant intricacies of their freight negotiations;
- Evaluating and procuring third party freight fixtures in many different commodities which compliment Anglo American period vessels and commodity trade;
- Oversee vessel P&L performance and manage operations personnel;
- Responsible for reviewing all Charter Party contracts pre- and post-fixture
- Conduct all freight differential calculations (including discharge port and bunker adjustments)
- Review, negotiate and conclude demurrage and brokerage settlements for the Commodity business unit's dry bulk freight activities
- Align chartering activities with monthly scheduling requirements.
- Plan, implement, manage, monitor and execute operational procedures on the Minor Bulk chartered fleet.
- Ensure strict compliance with all governing flag states, class regulations, ISM and ISPS issues with the chartered and managed fleet.
- Monitor the vessels performance trend and take necessary remedial actions to optimize by using weather routing systems or similar.
Business Development - Increasing Volumes and New Business (Atlantic Region)- Seek and secure 3rd party tonnes to support the fleet and grow the portfolio within the Atlantic market in a way that supports the wider Minor Bulk portfolio;
- Assist commodities traders with cost and freight sales by providing spot and future predictions of the freight market; and
- Build a network of Owners and suppliers able to support all activities in the Atlantic for the Minor Bulk business.
Group Governance and Risk Management- Maintain all dry bulk cargo and vessel fixtures within the Marketing BU's shipping system in a timely and compliant manner.
- Make improvements to process as and when required.
Customer Service- Liaise and interface with the commodity teams to develop dry bulk freight plans and forecast, including the utilisation of their dry bulk knowledge to increase delivered sales.
Qualifications
- Preferred - Degree educated with a qualification in a relevant subject area,
Knowledge
- An understanding of the shipping markets macro environments and the, commercial considerations affecting transactions.
- Experience in negotiating and contracting dry bulk freight contracts
- Experience in negotiating international shipping terms for dry bulk freight contracts
- Experience in a trading and cargo operations environment
- Experience in writing reports and analysing freight fixtures against the market
- Sounds knowledge of contract management.
- Deep understanding of marketing fundamentals (i.e. pricing, delivery strategy, value chain dynamics, net back calculations).
- Strong ability to prioritise deliverables under pressure.
- Communication A sound knowledge of typical dry bulk contract terms and conditions, with the ability to understand and communicate these terms to non-shipping staff within the organisation
- Systems A sound understanding of shipping systems and the lifecycle of the voyage including the P&L of such voyage's. An exposure to Veson is desirable
