Job description

Astute People are partnering with one of the leaders in Hazardous Waste Management to recruit a Maintenance Engineer to join their established team at their waste processing and landfill sites in Peterborough.

The strategically important Maintenance Engineer role comes with a salary of up to 55,000 for a Sunday-Thursday 50-hour working week and is based full-time across the two facilities.

Responsibilities and duties of the Maintenance Engineer role

Reporting to the Operations Manager you will:

  • Perform proactive and reactive maintenance on plant equipment, including AGMs (above ground mixers), powder storage silos, material transfer screws and other waste processing machinery.
  • Minimise plant downtime by scheduling repairs and routine maintenance to maximise efficiency and throughput.
  • Ensure compliance with safety policies and promote a strong safety culture.
  • Conduct regular checks on testing equipment (e.g., pressure and level switches, pressure vessels) in line with regulations.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and report incidents via the internal system.
  • Oversee external contractors, ensuring compliance with work procedures, permits, and RAMS documentation.
  • Manage stock levels and source critical spare parts for mobile and fixed plant, as well as generators.
  • Implement and maintain a recorded maintenance regime for fixed plant assets.
  • Lead and contribute to site projects, such as contractor selection and efficiency improvements.
  • Support site-wide maintenance, including leachate pumps, material transfer screws, and general repairs.
  • Continuously develop professional skills and maintain competence in the role.
  • Carry out any additional duties as required across two facilities in the Peterborough area.

This role is a 50-hour working week Sunday-Thursday. Please only apply if this is suitable.



Professional qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following:

  • HNC or equivalent in Mechanical, electrical or a relevant engineering qualification is essential.
  • Experience in maintaining site processing equipment, with a proactive and self-motivated approach.
  • A welding qualification or experience would be advantageous.
  • Instrumentation experience is desirable.
