Job description

Join us as a Mainframe Design Engineer at Barclays where you'll spearhead the evolution of our technology landscape, driving innovation and excellence. The purpose of this role will be to design and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

To be successful as a Mainframe Design Engineer you should have:

  1. An understanding of the lifecycle of a loan, or other products, within a lending platform and the ability to map a customer journey to specific implementations on different platforms.
  2. Integration experience, strong background in data integration and middleware.
  3. Demonstrated ability to define data providence across system.
  4. Logical thinking with problem-solving ability together with good communication and presentation skills, being able to vary/tailor a message across a broad range of audiences.
  5. Operational analysis.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  1. Experience of dealing with third parties.
  2. Strong communication skills to bridge technical and business teams effectively.
  3. Experience with Data and Mainframe technologies (e.g. COBOL / DB2).

Purpose of the role:

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues.

Accountabilities:

  1. Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools.
  2. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  3. Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  4. Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  5. Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  6. Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  7. Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
