Job description

The Royal Surrey Cancer Centre is looking for a committed, enthusiastic Clinical Nurse Specialist, providing keyworker support to Lung cancer patients alongside developing and expanding an already excellent service.

The post holder will be expected to contribute to the strategic direction and delivery of a quality service to patients and lead and develop this specialist nursing service within the Trust, working as an integral part of the multidisciplinary team.

Applicants should be able to demonstrate a high level of up-to-date relevant clinical knowledge and experience with relevant post registration training and development in cancer care, 1st Level Nursing degree, plus MSc. Experience in management of staff, resources, and service development is desirable. In addition, the post-holder must have excellent communication and decision-making skills, competency in advanced clinical skills such as advanced assessment and prescribing and be prepared or willing to undertake nurse-led reviews, be able to work as part of a team, but also work autonomously with minimum supervision.

Main duties of the job

JOB PURPOSE

The key function of the Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist is to work with the Lead Cancer Nurse to co-ordinate the delivery of a comprehensive Lung Cancer Nursing Service within the Trust.

The post holder will work clinically and strategically with the local MDTs to monitor and develop policy, training, and services against local and National guidelines including relevant IOG guidance and Cancer Measures.

Job responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY This autonomous role within lung cancer services provides support and undertakes the role of key worker to lung cancer patients and their families/carers from diagnosis and throughout their pathway. With the support of the MDT, the post holder will endeavor to provide a patient-focused service, offering holistic assessment, specialist support and advice, and information and psychological support as necessary. The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) will be responsible for the development of innovative nursing practice and the provision of specialist advice within their field. They will be an educational resource to all members of the MDT and the wider Trust and facilitate the development of nurses and healthcare staff in order to improve the patient experience.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse Part 1 or 12
  • First level degree in Cancer Nursing
  • Evidence of recent professional updating and relevant personal development in chemotherapy
  • Advanced assessment qualification
  • Independent / Non-medical prescribing qualification
  • Educated to Masters Level

Knowledge

  • Demonstrates professional awareness and knowledge
  • Understanding of current issues in Acute NHS setting
  • Consolidation of Nurse Training
  • Knowledge of clinical governance issues such as complaints handling, clinical risk management
  • Knowledge of current NHS and Professional issues
