Consultant in Emergency Medicine - 12 month Fixed Term Contract

Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust was formed on 1st October 2013, following the merger of Lewisham Healthcare NHS Trust and Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Woolwich. The Trust is seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine and a Locum Consultant in Emergency Medicine with PEM as a Sub-Speciality based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH). These appointments represent an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic ED team.

We offer medical, surgical and emergency services to local residents, and also provide a range of specialist services for South East London and beyond.

The Emergency Department has considerable educational expertise with instructors in ALS, ATLS and APLS courses as well as examiners for FRCEM. The successful candidates would be encouraged to develop an area of expertise or sub-specialisation within Emergency Medicine.

If you are not on the specialist register please also ensure you enclose evidence/confirmation that you will be on the specialist register or have a CCT within 6 months of the interview date.

Clinical:
In conjunction with consultant colleagues, managers, and senior nurses:

  • Ensure optimum care of all patients attending the Emergency Department (ED) including reception, triage, resuscitation, diagnosis, initial treatment and disposal of all emergencies.
  • Support the Clinical Director and the Clinical Lead of ED in the delivery of timely, high quality care in accordance with the Trust and national priorities, particularly the 4-hour standard for patients in the ED and the Clinical Quality Indicators.
Education & Teaching:
The Consultant will participate in the professional supervision, support, organisation and delivery of formal teaching programs for staff including:

  • Specialist/Specialty Registrars, Senior Clinical Fellows, Staff Grades and F2s/SHOs/ST1-2s.
  • Nursing staff specifically the Emergency Nurse Practitioners and RSCNs.
  • Undertake appropriate ‘mentoring’, appraisal and Educational/Clinical supervision of junior medical staff.
CPD:
  • Participate in continuing professional development at local, regional and national level. The Consultant will be a FRCEM (or equivalent) and is expected to fulfill the College’s CPD requirements.
  • Participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy and in line with the GMC revalidation requirement.
  • Ensure that he/she remains abreast of all developments in the field of EM and the delivery of Emergency Services.

Clinical Responsibilities:
In conjunction with consultant colleagues, managers, and senior nurses:

  • Ensure optimum care of all patients attending the Emergency Department including reception, triage, resuscitation, diagnosis, initial treatment and disposal of all emergencies. When on the ‘shop floor’ he/she will be expected to be actively involved ensuring that high quality clinical care is delivered and that relevant NHS standards are achieved.
  • Set standards and develop systems and guidelines for the clinical and operational management of patients.
  • Support the Clinical Director and the Clinical Lead of Emergency Department in the delivery of timely, high quality care in accordance with the Trust and national priorities, particularly the 4-hour standard for patients in the Emergency Department and the Emergency Clinical Quality Indicators.
  • Develop and implement rolling training and audit programmes to support the induction and development of staff, high standards and effective clinical care.
  • Conduct the ward rounds of patients managed by the emergency department on the Observation Ward/Clinical Decision Unit.
  • Assist with the development of Major Incident plans and related work.
  • Strive toward achieving performance standards.
Medical Education & Teaching:
The Consultant will participate in the professional supervision, support, organisation and delivery of formal teaching programs for all staff including:

  • Specialist/Specialty Registrars, Senior Clinical Fellows, Staff Grades and F2s/SHOs/ST1-2s.
  • Nursing staff specifically the Emergency Nurse Practitioners and RSCNs working with children in the department.
  • Medical students.
  • Ambulance Personnel.
  • Physician Associate students.
  • Undertake appropriate ‘mentoring’, appraisal and Educational / Clinical supervision of junior medical staff.
Clinical Audit and Clinical Governance:
  • Supervise / Participate in the Clinical Audit programme of the Emergency Department in accordance with Departmental and Trust policy as well as Quality Improvement Projects(QIPs).
  • Comply with the Trust’s Clinical Governance processes as stipulated by the Directorate and Medical Directors from time to time.
  • The post holder is responsible for data quality and complying with the policies, procedures and accountability arrangements throughout the Trust for maintaining accuracy and probity in the recording of the Trust’s activities.
Continuing Professional Development:
  • Participate in continuing professional development at local, regional and national level. The Consultant will be a Fellow of The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (or equivalent) and is expected to fulfill the College’s CPD requirements.
  • Contribute to clinical audit within the department and also to implement audit and research findings as appropriate in clinical practice.
  • Prepare and participate in an annual appraisal in accordance with Trust policy and in line with the GMC revalidation requirement.
  • Ensure that he/she remains abreast of all developments in the field of Emergency Medicine and the delivery of Emergency Services.
Policy, Planning and Management:
  • Support the Trust to deliver quality patient care.
  • Contribute to the development of clinical and organisational protocols and guidelines.
  • Assist in the development of the Annual Service Plan for the Directorate and Division and participate in the strategic planning of the service.
  • Comply with all Trust policies.
  • Assist in ensuring that the Trust Clinical Governance Strategy is implemented.
  • Involvement in the recruitment and appointment of junior medical staff in consultation with consultant colleagues, Human Resources and managers.
  • Assist in the organisation of efficient staff duty rotas.
  • Contribute to good communications between the department and the other relevant staff/departments within the Trust, outside agencies including Social Services, PCTs, General Practitioners, other Emergency Departments in neighbouring Trusts and Ambulance Services.
