Locum Consultant in Critical Care and Retrieval Medicine

The post will require work both at Whipps Cross University Hospital and with the Adult Critical Care Emergency Support Service (ACCESS) based at the St. Bartholomew's Hospital.

We are looking for a colleague with a passion for critical care and retrieval medicine to join our dynamic and innovative critical care unit at Whipps Cross, and who will also provide circa 45% of their clinical commitment to Retrieval Medicine as part of the ACCESS service.

Applications are encouraged from candidates with a retrieval background alongside either pure intensive care consultant experience/CESR/CCT, or dual training in ICM.

We are looking for people who can make a specific contribution to both departments and hospitals.

This is an excellent opportunity for dynamic individuals with the appropriate skills to join a first-class multi-disciplinary team providing the full range of services to the majority of East London and beyond in a progressive London teaching hospital environment.

The post holder will be an employee of Barts Health and there may be future opportunities or requirements to work at one of the other hospitals in the Barts Health group.

Main duties of the job

Consultants will have a continuing clinical and professional responsibility for the care of patients in their charge.

They will undertake administrative duties associated with providing patient care. Consultants are expected to practice in line with agreed departmental Trust and national policies and guidelines. It is also the duty of a consultant to:

• keep patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) informed about their condition
• involve patients (and/or their carers if appropriate) in decision making about their treatment
• Maintain professional standards and obligations as set out from time to time by the General Medical Council (GMC) and comply in particular with the GMC's guidance on 'Good Medical Practice' as amended or substituted from time to time.

A consultant is responsible for carrying out any work related to and reasonably incidental to the duties set out in their Job Plan such as:

• the keeping of records and the provision of reports
• the proper delegation of tasks
• Maintaining skills and knowledge.

Job description
Job responsibilities

The contract will be for 10-programmed activities (PAs). These activities will be split between direct clinical care (DCC) and supporting professional activities (SPA) as indicated below.

The successful candidate will start with a provisional job plan prior to agreeing a final job plan, including personal and professional developmental objectives with the Clinical Lead/Clinical Director within 3 months of commencement. The SPA allocation will be 2 per week (8 hours) given the requirement to maintain skills and CPD in two specialities.

This allocation could increase as the post holder develops roles within the departments and becomes more involved in audit, teaching, management and governance activities.

The consultant will follow a new Whipps Cross consultant critical care rota (below), introduced in October 2019 and agreed with HR, in which critical care is delivered by consultants/specialists in two dedicated weeks and a separate weekend over a 10 week cycle.

Qualifications/Clinical Skills
Essential

• Full GMC Registration
• Specialist Registration in ICM or within 6m CCT. Either dual CCT or Single.
• Evidence of advance training/fellowship in ICM or completion of Fellowship in intensive care. This would be expected along side Specialist Registration (or within 6m of CCT) in another speciality such as Anaesthetics, EM, AM.
• Retrieval Fellow/Consultant experience.
• Evidence of ALS certification and/or update

Desirable

• Experience of UK healthcare system
• ATLS. APLS.

Special Knowledge/Abilities and/or Experience
Essential

• Appropriate evidence that the candidate is able to operate at consultant level in a busy DGH ICU

Desirable

• Previous Experience of working at consultant level in a DGH ICU
