Job description

Locum Appointment for Service (General Surgery/A&E) (Ref: 211408)

Full-Time – 40 hours per week

Fixed term contract from August 2025

Opportunities available for 4, 6 or 12 month posts

£45,504 to £60,199 per annum (pro rata), plus banding supplement

This post also attracts a relocation package up to £4,000 (for a 12 month post) and

Distant Islands Allowance of £2,380 per annum (pro rata)

Based at the Gilbert Bain Hospital in Lerwick, this post would suit doctors who have just completed FY2 training and are considering a surgical career or a core surgical trainee waiting for a StR position. Alternatively, a doctor interested in a future career in general practice waiting for a StR position/a GP trainee who has completed training but wishes further surgical/A&E experience. Full GMC registration with a current licence to practice is essential for this role.

The successful applicant will work as a part of the surgical team:

  • The general surgical unit deals with general surgery as well as orthopaedic trauma. A substantial component of the post involves seeing and treating surgical patients in A & E. There is also the opportunity to attend surgical clinics and theatre. Night shifts involve three or four nights at a time covering surgical and medical A & E, as well as the wards.
