Literacy and Numeracy Support Specialist
Location: Wantage
Salary: £83.50 – £90 per day

Are you a tutor or experienced educator? What is stopping you from making a difference and an impact on the lives of Wantage Primary students?

As the Literacy and Numeracy Support Specialist, you will provide tailored, focused support to help a Year 2 student bridge the gap between their current academic level (Reception level) and their current Year 2 targets. You will play a crucial role in improving their focus and engagement in literacy and numeracy through creative, student-centered approaches. The student has challenges with engagement in their Literacy and Maths classes, often presenting in outbursts in the class.

This is your opportunity to make a difference in the child’s education, to allow their EHCP targets and academic level to improve. It is a challenging role, working in a fast-paced environment and really fulfilling when you see the child smile from pride in their achievement.

Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Delivering highly personalised 1:1 support sessions that make learning engaging, accessible, and fun.
  2. Using innovative strategies to build the Wantage student’s confidence and sustain their focus in literacy and numeracy tasks.
  3. Implementing structured activities and scaffolding learning to ensure steady progress in core skills such as reading, writing, and basic mathematics.
  4. Breaking down concepts into manageable steps while adapting your approach to match the student’s unique learning style.
  5. Encouraging self-regulation and fostering independence through positive reinforcement and consistency.
  6. Collaborating with teachers, parents, and the SENCO to align your strategies with the broader support plan and learning objectives.
  7. Celebrating every achievement—big or small—to boost the student’s self-esteem and love of learning.

The ideal candidate will:

  1. Be passionate about supporting children with ASD, ADHD, or additional learning needs.
  2. Have a sound understanding of literacy and numeracy development at the Reception to Year 2 level.
  3. Demonstrate excellent communication, patience, and adaptability.
  4. Use creative methods to make learning engaging and meaningful.
  5. Have previous experience working with children with SEN (desirable).
