The School of Biomedical Sciences and Pharmacy is considered one of the research flagships within the University of Newcastle, with multiple research themes aimed at addressing global health challenges. The School has a very large and diverse teaching operation, providing teaching in anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, pharmacology, microbiology, immunology and pharmacy in the College of Health Medicine and Wellbeing.
This is an exciting time for the Discipline of Exercise and Sport Science (EXSS), as it transitions to a new location at the main campus of the university. This relocation expands the sports ecosystem at Callaghan, establishing new, fully equipped exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor skills, and performance and data analysis laboratories. These facilities are co-located with the Forum, which includes world class health, fitness, sport, and recreation facilities including a high-performance gym, aquatic centre, and indoor/outdoor sporting spaces. The discipline of EXSS also delivers classes and operates a student-led exercise physiology clinic and an athlete testing centre at the nearby Hunter Sports Centre.
The EXSS discipline has established a strong research track record and has been successful in recruiting higher degree research students across a range of discipline areas. A range of complementary programs exist within the university, offering opportunity to build inter- and multidisciplinary research capability. The Hunter and Central Coast regions also offer the successful applicant the opportunity to build impactful collaborations with industry partners including Hunter Medical Research Institute.
