An exciting opportunity has arisen within the Chief Nursing Officer team for a part-time Deputy Director of Nursing for Workforce and Strategy on a 12-month secondment/fixed term basis. We are looking for a highly motivated, ambitious, knowledgeable senior nurse who will support the Director of Nursing to help us achieve our ambitions as set out through the North Bristol NHS Long Term People Plan. Your inclusive leadership style will influence key workforce portfolios such as developing the pathway to nursing, lead on safer staffing, and lead on Trustwide projects, plans, and policies that support nursing and midwifery planning and delivery. The post holder will have a key role in the organization in developing and maintaining a sustainable nursing and midwifery workforce for the future.

Main duties of the job

  1. Support the strategic delivery of the nursing and midwifery workforce programme and strategy across the Trust.
  2. Work with the workforce, talent acquisition, apprenticeship team, and professional colleagues to ensure there is a robust pathway to nursing and midwifery plan aligned to the Trust’s Long Term Workforce Plan.
  3. Support regular analysis and interpretation of workforce data and ensure compliance with safer staffing national guidance through close monitoring of key metrics and policy.
  4. Undertake bi-annual nursing establishment reviews using Safer Nursing Care Tools (SNCT), identifying key recommendations leading to measurable improvements to patient care.
  5. Demonstrate strong professional clinical leadership and role model NBT values.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The purpose of this role is to support the Chief Nursing Office in the delivery of its objectives through the application/demonstration of Nursing and Midwifery workforce, governance, and operational management knowledge on the key workforce priorities, aligned to the North Bristol NHS Long Term Workforce Plan and national strategy.

The Deputy Director of Nursing for Workforce and Strategy will be responsible for the strategic delivery of the nursing and midwifery workforce programme and strategy across the Trust. The role will support the delivery of key projects through engagement and senior leadership. The post holder will be a credible voice in its field and engage in an open and supportive way with key stakeholders, such as the Divisional leads to drive improvements in the workforce metrics and safer staffing. They will provide credible challenge for improvement, share meaningful best practices with internal teams, and support the future strategy.

A key objective of the post is to ensure compliance with safer staffing national guidance through close monitoring of key metrics and policy. The role is crucial for creating and maintaining focus, enthusiasm, and momentum for the safe staffing improvement programmes across the Trust and will contribute to Board reporting on such matters.

The post holder will be responsible to the CNO Director of Nursing for Workforce, Education & Strategy and will be expected to demonstrate strong professional clinical leadership and role model NBT values.

The post holder will support the Director of Nursing and the Associate Director Nursing Workforce Recovery to continually improve our safer staffing processes by ensuring policy management, development of Board reports, and assisting with the implementation of Trust and national initiatives. As such, the post holder must have a comprehensive knowledge of both existing and new clinical staffing models across nursing and midwifery, such as the Safer Nursing Care Tool (SNCT) or the BirthRate Plus tool and be confident presenting both within the Trust and to external stakeholders.

The post holder is responsible for the integrity and coherence of their defined projects and will develop and maintain action plans to support each individual project in conjunction with the Director of Nursing. The post holder will also be expected to lead daily staffing meetings.
