Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a senior specialised Echo Cardiac Physiologist, who is exceptionally motivated, highly skilled and an excellent communicator to join our enthusiastic, supportive and progressive team as Lead Physiologist for Echocardiography for ABUHB.

Clinical Physiology BSc degree combined with appropriate technical training and Echocardiography accreditation (BSE, EACVI or equivalent) are mandatory for this position.

We cover four main Hospital sites, Grange University Hospital, Royal Gwent Hospital, Nevill Hall Hospital and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr in addition to clinics in other eLGH hospital sites.

We have a dedicated Echo Educator who oversees the training of trainee echo physiologists', STP students, Registrars and the echo training for ITU personnel.

Main Duties of the Job

1. To work autonomously as the lead physiologist in echocardiography.
2. To lead the echocardiography area of Cardiac Physiology services. To plan and be responsible for Echo service development, ensuring provision of evidence based patient care, effective and efficient management of resources, staff development and education.
3. To lead the Echo Cardiac Physiology workforce across Aneurin Bevan Health Board sites.
4. To undertake a range of advanced diagnostic tests.
5. To undertake, supervise and teach highly complex cardiac clinical physiology procedures working to the standard set by the British Society of Echocardiography (BSE), Society for Cardiological Science and Technology (SCST), British Cardiac Society (BCS) and also the Registration Council for Clinical Physiologists (RCCP).
6. To provide leadership and direction for the cardiac physiology service within the Echocardiography Department.
7. To be responsible for the development, implementation, maintenance, research and audit of clinical services.

The Grange University Hospital will be the main base for this role but the candidate will be expected to partake in a rotation across all ABUHB sites.

Candidates will be expected to demonstrate a solid foundation of previous managerial experience and leading a team.

The post-holder will be working closely with the Clinical Lead for cardiac ultrasound. Lead the Echo Physiology team in support of our 14 Consultant Cardiologists with sub-speciality interests in Imaging (TTE, TOE, Stress echo, Cardiac CT, CMR, MIBI), Heart failure, coronary intervention and anti-brady pacing/complex device implantation/extraction.

Skills Essential

• Significant clinical experience at Highly Specialist Level.
• Extensive experience and knowledge to expert level in a range of invasive and non-invasive cardiac investigations, particularly Echocardiography.
• Ability to carry out and take lead responsibility for a broad range of Cardiac Investigations to highly advanced level and be able to provide detailed clinical reports.
• Extensive knowledge of all Cardiac Investigations at an advanced level including highly specialised and complex procedures. Detailed knowledge of current advances in Cardiology. Understand and interpret highly advanced specialist diagnostic cardiological investigation results.
• Understand the national and local guidelines and procedures required to perform clinical tests and demonstrate that they can carry these out to the required standards.
• Ability to critique and analyse multiple sets of detailed and advanced clinical and administrative information and make clinical decisions based on the results.
• Knowledge of regulatory issues for implantable devices.
• Knowledge and understanding of NHS structure and organisation. Understanding of current developments within the NHS.
• Ability to work independently. Ability to work autonomously and be self-motivated.
• Demonstrate excellent verbal and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills. Excellent keyboard and IT skills.
• Ability to fault find and troubleshoot on complex equipment.

Experience / Qualifications Essential

• Educated to Masters Level
• Relevant BSc Undergraduate Degree
• ILS or equivalent Professional qualifications: BSE TTE Accreditation, BSE TOE Accreditation, RCCP Registration
• Current Staff management experience
