We have an exciting new opportunity for an aspiring clinical pharmacy leader to join our pharmacy department at CUH. As the Lead Pharmacist - Medicine (Education & Improvement), you will have the opportunity to continue to develop advanced clinical knowledge while building up a repertoire of staff and service development skills. This post would be ideally suited to a candidate looking to develop further leadership skills towards Consultant Pharmacist credentialing or who is interested in a Pharmacy management career pathway.
The Pharmacy Department at Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is ambitious and forward-thinking, striving to ensure that the patient is always at the heart of everything we do. As a Lead Pharmacist in our clinical services team, you will be responsible for empowering your team to deliver this care through role model behaviors in your own clinical setting and service provision and planning.
We are re-designing our leadership model within the CUH Pharmacy Medicine team to create a range of opportunities for Advanced Clinical Pharmacists to work at higher leadership levels and develop skills for future progression onto either management or consultancy roles.
Main Duties of the Job
You will work in collaboration with the Lead Pharmacist - Medicine (Operations and Clinical Quality) to manage the day-to-day needs and oversight of the Pharmacy Medicine team. Responsibilities include divisional oversight of:
- Collaborating with the Lead Pharmacist - Medicine (Operations and Clinical Quality) to review service data, to inform, plan, and deliver opportunities for improvement within Division C.
- Development of in-house training and development opportunities for pharmacists and trainee pharmacists working in the Pharmacy Medicine team.
- Collaborating with the Clinical Pharmacy Technician leadership team to support training and development opportunities for clinical pharmacy technicians, pharmacy technical officers, and trainees in Medicine.
- Designing objectives for clinical rotational and resident pharmacists, including further development of prescribing scope of practice, quality improvement projects, service evaluation, and audit.
- Collaborating with colleagues within the Pharmacy Education and Training Team and Clinical Services Leads to establish the role of Designated Prescribing Practitioner (DPP) within the Pharmacy Medicine team.
- Collaborating with the Pharmacy Education and Training Team to support early career clinical services training for pharmacy undergraduate students and trainee pharmacists.

Job Responsibilities
Our Pharmacy Department
Our progressive and friendly pharmacy department consists of approximately 300 staff. The department provides clinical services to diverse patient groups across a wide range of therapeutic areas, including many highly specialised services. Within CUH Pharmacy, there is a strong sense of team spirit and many opportunities to work with colleagues from other clinical specialties.
The role would require working with a range of professionals within the pharmacy department and externally including: pharmacists, trainee pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, medical and nursing teams, operations team, transformation team, and quality team.
In addition to the operational side of this role (anticipated 30%), you will be required to provide an advanced clinical pharmacy service (anticipated 70%). The Pharmacy Medicine team looks after patients from the front doors in the Emergency Department, through Short Day Emergency Care (SDEC), to our acute medicines, on to our specialty areas and discharge lounges and Delayed Transfer of Care (DTOC) beds.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Masters level degree in pharmacy.
- Registered as a pharmacist with General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC).
- Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy/General Pharmacy Practice (or equivalent).
- Train the trainer course (or equivalent).
- Registered as an independent prescriber with the GPhC.
- Member of Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
- Member of the faculty of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (or working towards) at Advanced Stage II or Faculty Fellow.
- Research degree (MSc, MRes, PhD) or working towards this qualification.
Experience
- Extensive recent post-registration hospital experience as a clinical pharmacist at band 8a in the specialist clinical area in a teaching hospital.
- Recent significant experience of patient consultation.
- Experienced clinical pharmacist who has covered a range of clinical specialties.
- Highly specialised knowledge of drugs and therapeutic trends in specialist clinical area.
- Experience of the practical implementation of national guidance in drug use (e.g., NICE).
- Experience of documenting pharmaceutical care issues in patient notes.
- Experience of writing professional reports.
- Experience of developing and reviewing patient group directions and shared care guidelines, drug policies, and treatment guidelines.
- Evidence of having written, supervised, conducted, and implemented the outcomes of clinical audit.
- Experience of the practical application of antimicrobial stewardship initiatives.
- Experience of drug expenditure analysis and reporting.
- Experience of the management of high-cost and high-risk medicines.
- Experience as a personal tutor to a range of pre- and post-registration pharmacy staff groups.
- Experience of developing and leading on projects including change management and service development.
- Experience of working within a regional or national group to implement new or changed guidance.
- Previous management experience with responsibility for pharmacy staff.
- Experience of writing a business case.
- Experience of managing and supervising a research project.
- Experience of writing for pharmaceutical or educational publications.
- Experience of horizon scanning.
- Experience of leading on implementation of a national development or change in pharmacy practice.
- Experience of strategic medicines optimisation with both internal and external stakeholders.

- Computer literate with knowledge of Word, PowerPoint, and Excel (or equivalent IT systems).
