Job description

Wanted: Lead Buyer to be the face of Master of Malt to a range of suppliers.

Exciting role for an experienced, flexible and well-connected Senior / Lead Buyer to make a tangible contribution within a fast-paced, dynamic and customer-focused online drinks retailer.

About us:

We’re a multi-award-winning drinks and technology start-up on a mission to disrupt the drinks industry.

We’re re-imagining online drinks retail from the ground up, using cutting-edge technology and fanatical customer service to build a company we want to be customers of and create unexpected delight as we help people explore, buy and enjoy high-end whisky and other spirits.

In everything we do, we are disruptive innovators; it is baked into our DNA to challenge orthodoxy and received wisdom wherever we find it.

We’ve grown a lot since we were just a few kids in a shed with big dreams, but we haven’t lost our hunger to build something great, and we’re looking for people who have the same passion for making things better to join us on that journey.

In the last 10 years we’ve become the number 1 player in our industry, but we’ve barely gotten started. We’re excited about the future, so if you’d like to come and help us build it, read on!

About the role

You'll build and nurture genuine partnerships with our supply partners to enable long-term value creation. Great relationships within the industry are essential to succeeding within the role; it’s those relationships alongside having great category, consumer, and market insight that will secure leading and first-to-market ranges and offers. The other things keeping you busy will be:

  1. Category Strategy: Develop and implement a clear strategic plan to meet commercial targets.
  2. Relationship Management: Build and nurture genuine partnerships with our supply partners to enable long-term value creation.
  3. Leadership: Lead and develop a diverse and experienced buying team, with the ability to work and influence cross-functionally.
  4. Analytical Skills: Be an expert in using market and business data to identify opportunities and target profitable growth.
  5. P&L Management: Have experience managing a profit and loss (P&L) statement.
  6. Customer Focus: Ensure that the customer is at the heart of every decision you make.

About You

  1. It is essential to have a clear set of values that align with the values of the business.
  2. You should enjoy working in a fast-paced, creative, founder-led environment and be comfortable with ambiguity in an entrepreneurial setting.
  3. The ideal candidate must be commercially minded and customer-obsessed, with a passion for spirits being a plus.
  4. You need to be driven and focused on maintaining Master of Malt’s market-leading value for our customers across product, pricing, and propositions.
  5. Proven experience in a Senior Buying role.
  6. Proficient in P&L management.
  7. Strong people management skills, with an understanding of how to bring out the best in each team member.
  8. Experience working in a multichannel or pure play environment.
  9. Experience in the drinks industry is preferable; spirits experience is a significant advantage.
  10. Ideally, have wholesale and retail buying experience.
