Skills & Experience:

  • Must hold a relevant law degree and legal qualifications, ideally with a specialization in property, planning, and transport law.
  • Familiarity with local government regulations and procedures, particularly in relation to property, planning, and transport.
  • Demonstrable experience in handling complex legal matters within property development, planning regulations, and transport law.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to provide clear, concise legal advice and present cases effectively.
  • Proven ability to negotiate and advocate on behalf of clients in courts, tribunals, committees, and panels.
  • Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities to address complex legal issues in property, planning, and transport matters.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently, meet deadlines, and handle conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment.

What's involved with this role:

We’re looking for an experienced lawyer to handle complex acquisitions and disposals, advising independently on property issues such as development documentation, conditional agreements for lease, building leases, and documents for regenerating sites. You’ll be responsible for drafting and reviewing complex sale agreements, overage deeds, options, and pre-emption agreements. This role requires adaptability, the ability to meet tight deadlines, and effective management of conflicting priorities.

Key duties:

  • Provide proactive legal support to the Council on property, planning, and transport matters, helping to meet policy and strategic objectives while minimizing legal risks.
  • Advocate and negotiate on behalf of the Council in courts, tribunals, committees, and panels on property, planning, and transport issues.
  • Stay up-to-date with relevant property, planning, and transport legislation, conducting legal research to ensure compliance and informed decision-making.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Legal Services Division and across departments, providing support as needed and delivering training on property, planning, and transport legal matters.
  • Ensure all legal work in property, planning, and transport complies with statutory requirements, standing orders, financial regulations, and health and safety legislation.
