Job Description

Job purpose

To provide archival assistance and laboratory support to Glasgow Tissue Research Facility (GTRF) service users. Work will support the smooth and effective running of GTRF laboratory and assigned research projects in line with the SCS. This is a supporting role within the GTRF laboratories. The main duties are archiving and sample management.

  • To maintain the tissue archives stored in GTRF and undertake the implementation of a digital sample management system.
  • To assist service users in accessing FFPE archival tissue by retrieving archival material from the NHS storage facility off-site (Dava Street) and Pathology archives at the QEUH. This will include, but not limited to, lone working in NHS archives and filing of NHS samples.
  • Manage the GTRF database of blocks and slides, ensuring that each stage of the archiving process is carefully documented ensuring cases are accurately filed and easily retrievable.
  • Undergo gaining a research passport/honorary contract and NHS competencies to align with NHS procedures for Human Tissue archival work.
  • Contribute to the safe and well-organised functioning of the laboratory. Ensure that consumables and equipment are appropriately stocked and maintained.
  • In liaison with relevant senior staff, monitor technical standards, advise, implement, and evaluate improvements to existing protocols, to ensure compliance with Good Clinical Laboratory Practice (GCLP).
  • Keep up to date with advances in the relevant discipline and seek to apply this knowledge to technical activities to further enhance the learning experience.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, participate in team meetings/discussions, and contribute to the wider College/Institute/School activities as required.

Essential

Knowledge / Qualifications

A1. Scottish Credit and Qualification Framework level 5 or 6 [National 5 or 6, Scottish Vocational Qualification level 2 or 3] or equivalent, and experience of personal development in a similar role.

A2. Detailed knowledge of relevant NHS systems and protocols.

A3. Up to date knowledge of relevant laboratory Health and Safety legislation/policies. HNC/HND in relevant discipline is desirable.

Skills

Essential

C1. Good verbal and written communication skills.

C2. Good interpersonal skills, working independently and as part of a team.

C3. Good working knowledge of widely used software such as Office365.

C4. Accuracy and attention to detail.

C5. Demonstrable work experience in a similar role, with similar responsibilities.

C6. An understanding or ability to learn and appreciate the risks of manual handling and risk assessments.

C7. Understand the legislation around using human tissue in research and GDPR.

C8. Comfortable working off-site, in warehouses, at height and, occasionally, alone.

Desirable

D1. Be familiar with GCLP and laboratory accreditation.

D2. Driving license and vehicle desirable.

D3. Demonstrable technical skills aligned to the specified discipline or assigned research project specifically in working in NHS/Research archives and block/slides selection and retrieving.

Experience

Essential

E1. Demonstrable work experience in a similar technical role, with similar responsibilities.

E2. Experience of contributing to the creation or development of technical resources or ways of working.

E3. Experience of planning and organising own workload to meet the needs of service users.

Desirable

F1. Previous experience working in quality-managed environment (e.g. good clinical laboratory practice, GCLP).

Terms and Conditions

Salary will be Grade 4, £23,881 - £26,338 per annum.

This post is full time and open ended with funding available up until 31 March 2026.
