Who You Are / Your Next Challenge

We have a great opportunity for a results driven, confident and commercial individual to join Petroineos Trading Limited (PITL) as a Junior Freight Trader based in our London office. Reporting to the General Manager of Shipping, the position will focus on the trading of all aspects of the freight business as it relates to PITL current Crude/Products/Chemical/LNG. This includes both developing trading strategies as well as managing freight exposure for the Company.

The successful candidate will undertake entrepreneurial trading of freight swaps to generate additional P&L to complement our physical trading activity. The role will work to enhance the flow of freight we generate to provide a platform for freight trading as well as generate extra optionality for the Shipping and physical desks.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Trading Freight to develop P&L on a clean sheet.
  2. Trading freight swaps and other paper devices as appropriate.
  3. Negotiating and concluding profitable market transactions on a spot/term basis, according to guidelines and limits received.
  4. Maintaining and developing relationships with colleagues and clients within both the wider front trading desk community and the Chartering sector.
  5. Identifying and developing new business opportunities within the market to create value for the Company.
  6. Taking on significant trading freight risk, managing this risk and generating profits for the Company.
  7. Providing accurate market information on the freight markets to relevant departments.
  8. Providing management with new marketing strategies and present a personal view to contribute to the decision-making process.
  9. Carrying out analysis of Freight markets as they relate to different and specialist grades.

What we’re looking for / Skills that will help you in the role

  1. Relevant previous experience in trading of Freight in the Oil and Gas/ Energy Industry (advantageous if coming from a shipping & logistic or an energy market trading environment; such as a trading houses preferred).
  2. Solid knowledge and understanding of oil fundamentals, crude, products, grades, qualities, geopolitical and environmental influence on commodity markets and the freight industry.
  3. Prior experience dealing with price exposure, risk profile, all trading instruments and technical trading.
  4. Good knowledge of typical trading counterparties.
  5. Experience of Chartering and/or Commercial Oil Shipping.
  6. Proven awareness of trading risk and possess risk taking capabilities.
  7. Very strong numerical and analytical skills.
  8. Strategic thinking and practical problem solving.
  9. A positive attitude, highly self-motivating and able to manage stress are key characteristics for this role.
  10. Great team player as well as having a self-starter mindset to grow the Freight book.
  11. Possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
  12. Proficient in Microsoft Office, standard software and software dedicated to the trading activities.
  13. Knowledge of stochastic modelling techniques such as sensitivity analysis or Monte Carlo simulation is a plus but not essential.
  14. Programming skills (e.g., SQL, Python etc.) and experience of utilising large data sets is a plus but not essential.
  15. Demonstrable ability to learn new skills and adapt to market developments.
