We have a new and very exciting opportunity to join the Data Insight Team within Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies as a Junior Data Scientist. This is a unique and rewarding role where you will directly contribute to making communities safer by utilising cutting edge technologies to tackle some of the most important challenges faced by modern policing.

As policing becomes more complex, there is an ever growing need to understand and interpret large data sets to provide insight and support decision makers, ensuring we serve our communities in the most efficient and effective way. Why this role matters?

As a Junior Data Scientist you will influence decision making, working closely with other Data Scientists, creating bespoke Machine Learning (ML) models and using advanced analytical approaches and providing actional insights from complex data.

Using your keen analytical and problem solving skills to explore emerging technologies such as ML, AI and predictive analytics to address issues like crime prevention, resource management and public trust.

What will you do?

  • Use advanced analytics techniques to interpret and communicate findings from complex data to shape critical decisions.
  • Develop and maintain ML models to enhance insight from complex data.
  • Collaborate with a diverse range of teams, including police officers, analysts and senior leaders offering data-driven solutions to support operational effectiveness.

What are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will possess a keen interest in applying data science to policing data. Knowledge of Python, R and SQL (MSSQL) or similar languages with a willingness to develop and grow. Strong problem solving skills and an analytical mindset with the ability to work independently and as part of a larger team. Excellent communication skills and the ability to translate complex technical data into clear actionable insights.

For the successful candidate there is an opportunity to complete an apprenticeship, allowing them to learn while working. There is opportunity within the team to progress throughout different levels, such as Junior to Associate then Associate to Senior Data Scientist.

The Data Insight Team have access to a dedicated infrastructure to enable both forces to get better insight from data; this consists of a dedicated Linux Machine Learning server and MSSQL Data Warehouse.

As a Junior Data Scientist, you will work with your colleagues in the Data Insight Team to drive our analytical capabilities in supporting front line investigations as well as performance and demand reporting to all business areas. This will involve using IDE’s such as PyCharm, Microsoft Visual Studio and RStudio, along with using GIT Version Control integration; the extensive use of T-SQL and SQL and the development of Docker containers.

The Junior Data Scientist salary is a Band D £29,649 - £33,264. You will be working in a small team which covers both Norfolk and Suffolk Constabularies and will report to the Business Intelligence (BI) Manager. The work is varied, dynamic and interesting, with an excellent team environment. The team now largely work from home with occasional requirements to attend the office, but agile working is available. There are flexible working opportunities along with access to the force’s sports and social club and local government pension schemes.

Hours of work are 37 hours per week Monday to Friday, with flexible working also considered. This post is offered on a permanent basis.

Pay: £29,649.00-£33,264.00 per year
