Job description

Local authorities are responsible for helping children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) to get to and from school. Over the last few years, a combination of rising costs, increased demand, and budget cuts have led to increased pressures, with over 80% of local authorities exceeding their school transport budget. We’re working with a fast-growing software company who are on a mission to deliver positive change. They have created a cloud-based transport planning tool that helps local authorities to save money whilst ensuring a high quality of service for students and reducing carbon emissions. Having experienced exceptional growth and success across the UK market, they are looking to expand overseas.

The skills we’re looking for:
  • Commercial experience with scientific/mathematical software.
  • Extensive experience with Java.
  • Any experience working with maps/GIS is highly desirable.
  • Ideally a degree in a numerate discipline.
  • Any experience of the following is helpful: JavaScript, PrimeFaces, C#.Net, WildFly, Azure, PostgreSQL, Junit, Playwright.
  • An aptitude to learn and someone who promotes self-improvement.
  • Great collaboration and communication skills.
What you’ll be doing:

You’ll be working on multiple codebases, different stacks, and at varying maturity levels. Every day will be different; you could be supporting the QA team with fixing bugs and writing tests, developing new functionality, as well as researching and testing new algorithms and techniques. You could be developing a GeoJSON interface, implementing functionality to enforce who can or cannot share transport with whom, and engineering massively scalable automated capability (Artificial Intelligence). They’re taking their product and services overseas, so you’ll be someone who likes a challenge, is keen to learn, and likes to think about the bigger picture to make continuous improvements.

What you’ll get in return for your talents:

You’ll be joining a business that you’ll feel proud to be a part of. The salary range is £50k - £57.5k and they offer flexible working hours (core hours of 10:00 – 15:00), remote working, and matched pension contributions up to 6%. There’s 25 days holiday, with the option to carry over up to 5 days to the following year and buy up to an additional 10 days, as well as an employee wellbeing package. They will also support your professional learning and development, and being part of a small team, you’ll have plenty of scope to contribute your ideas and shape your role.
