The Role:
As the Head of Building Safety, you will lead the development, implementation, and oversight of the council's building safety strategies, ensuring full compliance with current regulations and emerging legislation. You will play a key leadership role in managing and mentoring the Building Safety Manager, ensuring the council meets the requirements of the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) and maintains robust internal reporting.
You will be responsible for writing building safety cases, addressing BSR clarification requests, and acting as the central link between the Building Safety team and the Strategic Director. This role will also involve driving the integration of building safety processes within the wider asset management function while ensuring collaboration across multiple teams and engaging external stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities:
* Lead the development and implementation of the council's building safety policy and strategy.
* Ensure full compliance with the Building Safety Act, Fire Safety Act, and other relevant legislation.
* Mentor and provide practical support to the Building Safety Manager to meet BSR demands.
* Write building safety cases and respond to BSR clarification requests.
* Drive the integration of building safety processes across the council's asset management functions.
* Lead and manage a multi-disciplinary team, fostering collaboration across departments.
* Act as the primary point of contact for building safety issues, advising senior leadership on risks and opportunities.
* Engage with residents on building safety matters, ensuring transparency and building trust.
* Manage relationships with contractors, consultants, and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and performance standards.
* Develop and maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for building safety and provide regular reports to senior management.
About You:
We are seeking an experienced and highly motivated individual with significant expertise in building safety and compliance, ideally within a local authority or housing provider. You should be confident in leading large-scale safety programs and possess excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Key Requirements:
* Extensive experience working with the Building Safety Regulator (BSR) and managing building safety for high-rise and complex residential buildings.
* Proven experience in writing building safety cases and addressing BSR clarification requests.
* A relevant surveying qualification or equivalent experience.
* Demonstrable experience in mentoring within building safety or related technical areas.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong report writing ability.
* Strong leadership and people management skills, with a track record of leading successful teams.
* In-depth knowledge of the Building Safety Act, Fire Safety Act, and related legislation.
* Proven experience in risk management, safety compliance, and resident engagement.
