As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by BP (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK's first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking an experienced Industrial Relations Manager to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside project based at our new site in Redcar, Teesside.

What you'll be doing

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Industrial Relations Strategy:
  • Develop, implement, and review the project industrial relations strategy in alignment with Balfour Beatty's current IR/ER plan and policy framework.
  • Ensure all industrial relations activities comply with relevant employment laws and regulations.
  • Collective Bargaining:
    • Where relevant lead the local negotiations for collective bargaining agreements with unions, representing Balfour Beatty's interests.
    • Develop negotiation strategies and assist in conflict resolution that align with the company's operational and strategic goals.
    • Run the local dispute resolution procedures.
    • Be the local subject matter expert on WRAs (NAECI, CIJC etc) and the local SPA/adoptions.
  • Employee Relations:
    • Act as the primary point of contact for employee representatives, unions, and external bodies concerning industrial and employee relations matters.
    • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues and grievances in conjunction with our ER Centre of Expertise, ensuring a fair and consistent approach in line with Balfour Beatty's policies & procedures.
  • Communication:
    • Foster effective communication channels between employees, management, and unions, promoting Balfour Beatty's commitment to a collaborative working environment.
  • Dispute Resolution:
    • Handle investigations and provide recommendations for dispute resolution, ensuring all actions are in line with Balfour Beatty's ethical standards.
    • Represent the company in labour disputes, arbitration, and conciliation processes.
  • Reporting and Analysis:
    • Prepare and present reports on industrial relations activities and trends to senior management.
    • Conduct research and analysis on industrial relations to support informed decision-making and strategic planning.

    Who we're looking for

    The following Skill, Experience and Qualifications are required:

    • Proven experience in a similar role within a large organisation, essential with exposure to unionised environments such as construction or infrastructure sectors. Experience of civil engineering and/or M&E projects is preferred.
    • Strong knowledge of UK labour laws and regulations.
    • Demonstrated experience in collective bargaining and dispute resolution.
    • Excellent negotiation and communication skills.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
    • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of people.
    • Strong ethical standards.
    • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
