Why we want you
We have 2 roles as independent members of the Audit and Risk Committee in RSPB are seeking candidates who are passionate about protecting and restoring nature. Independent members will join other members of the RSPB Audit & Risks Committee to speak up for nature, to ensure that nature and green spaces are enjoyed by urban populations as well as those living in the countryside, and to help spread the word that everyone has a role to play in protecting the environment, as well as a right to enjoy and benefit from its natural beauty.

What You Will Be Doing

  • As an Independent Member of the Audit & Risks Committee, you will play a key role in overseeing RSPB’s financial integrity, risk management, and governance. You will provide independent oversight, challenge, and guidance to support RSPB’s mission while ensuring compliance with best practices and regulatory requirements.
  • Review and advise on financial reporting, risk management, and internal controls as well as support the Board in maintaining transparency, accountability, and good governance.
  • Provide independent scrutiny of audit processes and financial performance and identify and assess key risks affecting RSPB’s mission and operations. Help uphold RSPB’s values and commitment to environmental sustainability.

The Skills You Need

We welcome applicants with experience in finance, risk management, governance, audit, and law, particularly in the charity, public, or environmental sectors. Ideal candidates will have:

Personal Capabilities

  • Integrity, independence, and sound judgment
  • Strategic thinking and the ability to assess risks and opportunities.
  • A commitment to our mission and values in environmental conservation.

Interpersonal Capabilities

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to challenge and support constructively.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a governance setting.
  • Willingness to engage in debate while respecting diverse viewpoints.

Contextual Knowledge

  • Understanding of the charity, public, or environmental sectors.
  • Awareness of governance frameworks and regulatory environments.
  • Experience in charity governance, compliance, or strategic leadership.
  • Knowledge of sustainability, conservation, or ethical funding.

Technical Knowledge

  • Experience of financial oversight, risk management, audit, governance, and law.
  • Strong understanding of financial oversight, internal controls, and compliance.
  • Familiarity with charity accounting or risk management best practices.
