Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen in Immunology within the NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership (ESEL). We are an organisation, jointly owned by Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. Set up as an arms-length organisation, hosted by Barts Health NHS Trust, we have our own board and governance framework, with each of the three trusts having an equal voice and vote in the running of the Pathology Partnership. One of the largest pathology providers in the NHS, the Pathology Partnership brings together the strengths of teams from each of the three trusts into a single organisation, dedicated to the provision of high quality and cost-effective pathology services.


We are in search of a proactive, dynamic Scientific and Operational lead. The post holder must possess a thorough understanding of service management and transformation. You will drive business performance and growth whilst ensuring we deliver an effective service to our internal and external service users.


Main duties of the job

The role is a key strategic position, developing and delivering our local, trust and network strategy. The East and South East NHS Pathology Network Immunology service provides services to Bart's Health NHS Trust, Homerton Healthcare and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Immunology department provides a comprehensive service for in-patients as well as operating a regional referral service. We are a progressive and busy department looking for an enthusiastic person to lead this excellent team. You will have experience of leading an Immunology service, be organised and work well under pressure.


The department has state of the art flow cytometry facilities, ELISA processors, Phadia 250 analysers for autoimmunity and allergy, and automated immunofluorescence processors. The department is involved in translational research and had a range of specialist / bespoke manual assays. We are a national referral centre for some biological monitoring tests.


Training and Development

We are supported by an active teaching-hospital environment, with a comprehensive range of accredited CPD activities and we actively encourage professional development. The Immunology department is located in a purpose built Pathology and Pharmacy Building at the Royal London Site. The laboratory is fully UKAS accredited, and has full HCPC/IBMS/STP/HSST training status.


About us

The NHS East and South East London Pathology Partnership is an arms-length organisation providing pathology services to Barts Health NHS Trust, Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Lewisham and Greenwich NHS Trust. The Pathology Partnership is hosted by Barts Health.


The Pathology Partnership is based on well-established models for pathology networks, with the Royal London Hospital becoming the main hub laboratory for the network and Essential Service Laboratories (ESL) as a minimum at all other Hospital sites.


Pathology is made up of the following services - Blood Sciences including Haematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry, Infectious Diseases including Microbiology and Virology, Cellular Pathology including Histopathology, non-gynae Cytology and mortuary services, Immunology, Cytogenetics and Molecular Haematology, Immunophenotyping, Clinical Transplantation and Retinoblastoma.


The 2020/21 total operating costs across the Partnership were c. £126m per annum with a workforce establishment of circa. 822 WTE. Experience
Essential
  • Extensive senior level experience of operational management in Pathology services, specifically Immunology.
  • Knowledge of management theory, including personnel management, risk management and health and safety.
  • Has comprehensive knowledge of management of quality within the laboratory.
  • A proven track record of implementing and managing change.
  • Experience of workforce planning and redesign.
  • Experience of business planning, preparing capital bids, and bids for resources to extend the service when required.
  • Experience of budget management and cost improvement program delivery.

Desirable
  • Proven experience of building relationships and working in partnership with both internal and external stakeholders.

Skills
Essential
  • Advanced communication, presentation, negotiation and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to analyse, interpret and present complex data/results/concepts. Able to clarify key points from diverse and complex sets of information.
  • Intermediate computer skills, across all Microsoft packages, including word processing, spreadsheet and presentation packages.
  • Ability to lead, organise and manage staff in a large and complex laboratory, whilst motivating and inspiring the team.
  • Ability to initiate and implement change.

Desirable
  • Experience of implementing evidence-based practice.

Knowledge
Essential
  • Extended knowledge of Immunology.
  • Knowledge of management of quality within the laboratory including working knowledge and experience of UKAS ISO15189.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices in change management.
  • Awareness of scientific developments and modern technology in Immunology diagnostics and how they may influence the future of pathology.

Qualifications
Essential
  • MSc. Biomedical Science or IBMS Special Examination (Fellowship).
  • Registration with the Health Care Professions Council.
  • Evidence of participation in mandatory courses and CPD.

Desirable
  • Recognised management qualification or appropriate experience.
  • IBMS Certificate of Expert Practice in immunology.
