Job description

Imaging Technician (Temporary), Harvard University (Cambridge)

This is a full-time temporary position for up to 90 days

SUMMARY

The Imaging Technician II produces high-quality digital images of library materials and collections. Creates images using digital cameras, film scanners, and document scanners. Chooses and adjusts studio lighting for desired effect. Applies digital image processing techniques to adjust tone, color, scale, cropping and to otherwise reformat digital images for a wide range of research, teaching, access, and preservation uses. Performs maintenance and calibration procedures on studio equipment as directed. Arranges delivery and return of source materials with repository staff and patrons. Performs quality control tasks to ensure work is complete and meets established standards. Works with other Imaging staff to schedule shared equipment usage. Handles irreplaceable objects including rare books, photographic materials, maps, and manuscripts. Executes and contributes to the development of complex imaging workflows. Undertakes special projects as directed.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Operates 35mm and medium format digital cameras.
  2. Operates film scanners.
  3. Operates roller and sheet fed document scanners.
  4. Uses studio lighting equipment and accessories to achieve desired effect.
  5. Uses image processing software to adjust digital images to match the color and tonality of originals, and to adapt them for a variety of specialized uses.
  6. Schedules delivery and return of source materials and maintains accurate records of library materials delivered to and picked up from the studio.
  7. Calibrates and maintains studio equipment as directed.
  8. Performs quality control reviews.
  9. Records work steps and production statistics.
  10. Handles library materials (including irreplaceable art objects, rare books, historical photographs, and other image collections) according to established guidelines.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Setting up camera and lighting equipment and positioning original material involves lifting (up to 40 pounds), reaching, bending, and carrying. Assignments involve sitting or standing for extended periods and can require working from a ladder. Handling of delicate materials and equipment requires physical dexterity. High volume projects require repetitive actions to be performed.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Majority of the work associated with this position is performed in a photography studio. Work is performed in service operation with an expectation of high productivity and strict attention to detail.

Qualifications

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  1. H.S. Diploma or equivalent.
  2. 2 years of professional experience in photography, digital imaging, or other graphic arts fields.
  3. Understanding of photographic principles, with digital cameras and with studio lighting equipment and accessories.
  4. Ability to accurately evaluate color and contrast.
  5. Experience with and facility for working with computers and software applications.
  6. Experience with Macintosh and Windows operating systems.
  7. Experience using Adobe Photoshop and other software to perform color and tonal matching and image optimization.
  8. Experience using Microsoft Office Applications.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Bachelor's degree in photography or a related field, desirable.
  2. Experience making digital reproductions in a visual resources collection or library, museum, or archives environment.
  3. Coursework in art history, architectural history, or studio art desirable.
  4. Ability to adhere to strict handling requirements for rare and delicate materials.
  5. Ability to maintain acute attention to detail while performing repetitive tasks.
  6. Ability to work accurately and independently.
  7. Ability to initiate and adapt to change, to analyze and solve problems, and to be flexible and work collaboratively.
  8. Good oral and written communication skills.
  9. Must be organized, disciplined, and highly productive.
