Job overview

Job Summary

The post holder will be part of an integrated service inclusive of health and social care staff, working collaboratively with both primary and secondary care professionals. The post holder shall act as an expert resource for the multidisciplinary team and work collaboratively with Care Home staff and management for all patients that are placed onto Pathway One, Two or Three and awaiting further health and social care assessments.

The post holder will review and assess patients that are Walsall residents or have a registered Walsall G.P on ICS Pathways One, Two or Three with an identified Mental Health condition or need.

The post holder should be working towards their V300 prescribing or have the desire to complete the training. Additionally, the post holder needs to maintain their own professional development in relation to mental health nursing practice.

Main duties of the job

  • Promote the Trust’s clinical governance framework including participation in clinical supervision.
  • To work within the framework of clinical governance in order to safeguard standards of care and monitor junior members of the team against these standards.
  • Practice within the code of professional conduct ensuring knowledge and clinical expertise is maintained and developed within the scope of professional practice.
  • To work within the clinical effectiveness framework using the best available evidence, research and audit to plan, implement and evaluate care.
  • Ensure that all legal requirements relating to Mental Capacity, safeguarding, DOLs, Mental Health Act and the Care Act are considered and adhered to in relation to patient care.
  • To be a source of expertise / clinical specialist within ICS in relation to mental health.

Planning and Organisational Skills

  • To work with the Team Manager and multi-agency team to develop robust systems for future service development.
  • Undertake delegated duties as appropriate and contribute to the effective functioning of the team.
  • Ensure caseload is managed as a team and work is delegated according to skill and knowledge base.

The mental health nurse’s role is pivotal in delivering holistic, high-quality care to people of all ages who are experiencing a range of difficulties, emotional distress and/or mental illness.

The unique nature of mental health nursing means it is an emotionally demanding, but rewarding career choice requiring exceptional dedication.

The role encompasses a wide range of healthcare functions including system working, reducing health inequalities, leading service transformation, staff retention and recruitment, staff education and development and using research, evidence, and quality improvement to inform practice.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • NMC registered Mental Health Nurse
  • Education to diploma or degree level and able to demonstrate evidence of post registration professional development

Knowledge and Experience

  • Post registration practice within a secondary care setting
  • Experience of effective staff management

Skills and Aptitudes

  • Specialist Nursing Knowledge of caring for people with a Mental Health condition for adults over the age of 18.
  • To have access to a vehicle to be able to travel frequently throughout the working day across Walsall and the out of Borough as the post requires.
