The Opportunity

We have an exciting opportunity to join our leadership team as the HSE Director responsible for Health, Safety, and the Environment.

This is a business critical role, providing essential leadership, management and support fostering a culture of continuous improvement and attaining the highest level of performance. You will lead the development and implementation of effective HSE management systems, processes, and procedures across multiple business units, sectors and projects. The role provides a unique opportunity to lead and embed a positive safety culture across the organisation, with direct responsibility for a dedicated team and collaborating with senior leadership to achieve sustainable business growth and to protect our planet for future generations.

Vital Energi have delivered 15% year on year growth for over a decade and continue to experience substantial growth opportunities which supports our vision to deliver revenues in the order of £500m alongside our current 5year plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Overall responsibility for the HSE Management Systems and certification for all companies in the Group; ensuring compliance with current legislation and best practice, timely communication of any new legislative changes and implementation of system changes in a manner for appropriate action.
  2. Manage, maintain and improve the Group Integrated Quality, Environmental and Health & Safety Management System to ISO9001, ISO 14001 & OHSAS18001 externally audited standards and work towards the attainment of new accreditations based on business needs.
  3. Lead the drive for continual improvement of these standards throughout the Group; determining the strategic direction and work priorities for the continuous improvement of the HSE management programme and systems; producing agreeing and coordinating an annual HSE Action Plan and longer term HSE vision.
  4. Advise Board and senior management team/ line management and assists with the implementation of new or existing HSE related legislation, rules and standards to include fire prevention, health and safety awareness training.
  5. Act as Competent Person to comply with statutory requirements under Management of Health & Safety at Work Regulations.
  6. Lead and support in-house HSE team to advise, mentor/coach, monitor and report to line management and others in both office and on site, on the day to day application and delivery of HSE processes operations and requirements.
  7. Prepare and deliver performance reports for monthly HSE Board meetings.
  8. Act as lead to liaise with interested parties such as HSE, Environment Agency/SEPA, insurance company and other key stakeholders.
  9. Provide support and expertise to line management in respect to personal injury and incident investigation and reporting (including dangerous occurrences and occupational diseases); acting as lead investigator in any investigation involving significant environmental breach or fatal personal injury.
  10. Ensure arrangements are in place to plan, organise and deliver an annual internal HSE audit programme.
  11. Manage / assist with external audits as and when necessary to ensure accreditations are maintained or achieved.
  12. Liaison with People/ Training function for coordinating training plan, offering guidance where appropriate and updating information for personnel, audit and IIP requirements.
  13. Facilitate all forms of risk assessment e.g. general, manual handling, COSHH, fire prevention and acts as a final authority where a specialist response is required in relation to risk assessments performed by others.
  14. Develop and sustain excellent business relations with Clients and suppliers to adopt/encourage best practice.

Qualifications:

  1. The ideal candidate will have ten years' + experience of working in a similar industry environment undertaking tasks comparable to the role.
  2. Extensive knowledge of ISO 9001 and 14001 standards and ISO 45001.
  3. Qualifications include: NEBOSH Diploma (essential), Degree or similar(preferred) in Occupational Health and Safety.
  4. Externally accredited internal auditor qualification (14001/18001/9001).
  5. NVQ L3 CQI Certificate in Quality Management and CIEH or equivalent (preferred).
  6. Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment or NEBOSH Environmental Certificate Training (preferred).
  7. Membership of recognised Professional body i.e. CMIOSH; IEMA; IQC (or working towards).

The Location

  • With Offices across the UK (Glasgow, Newcastle, Swansea, Burton, London and Blackburn) this role will be predominately based out of the Blackburn or London offices with responsibility for all business areas. A willingness to travel and flexible working will be essential to being successful in the role.
