The post holder is responsible for ensuring immediate HIV care and will work primarily within the HIV service at Tameside and Stockport. The post holder will assess, plan implement and evaluate the care for HIV positive patients, supporting and guiding junior staff in the process. The post holder will provide direct patient care and have detailed clinical knowledge of the specialist area. The post holder will assist the senior Nurses in ensuring that high standards of quality of care are delivered and maintained. The post holder will act as a positive role model within the department for staff, patients, and carers. The post holder will deputise for the senior nurse as required. The post holder will enable nurses to acquire clinical and professional competencies by facilitating high quality education and staff development opportunities.

Post holders will be expected to participate fully in their personal development.

A band 5-6 training role would be considered if applicants are lacking in clinical skills or experience.

Main duties of the job

1. Assist in the daily HIV Clinical Nurse Specialist services for people living with HIV offering clinical advice, self-management support and referral to other appropriate community or voluntary sector services to promote health and wellbeing.
2. To triage and action urgent and non-urgent clinical and/or administrative tasks.
3. To practice HIV and sexual health nursing according to agreed HIV and Sexual and reproductive health clinical protocols and guidelines.
4. To supply medication (as appropriate) within the boundaries of Patient Group Directions with the required training. Potentially undertaking the non-medical prescribing course.
5. Support pre and post registration nurses, and other staff groups as required.
6. Work flexibly in accordance with the needs of the service. This will include the cover of early evening clinics.
7. Assist with telephone enquiries as required giving accurate HIV advice and information to clients and other professionals as necessary.
8. Assist with the delivery of the HIV clinical outreach services as and when required.
9. Attend and participate in regular team, HIV and MDT meetings.
10. Attend ward rounds with the HIV doctors, providing a MDT approach to inpatient care, discharge planning and follow-up care.
11. Participate in processes to improve capacity of HIV testing and results reporting.

Person Specification

Qualification

• Specialty qualification
• Teaching qualification
• Preparation for Mentorship or equivalent or willing to undertake

Skills and Ability

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Organisational skills
• Ability to work independently and within a multi-disciplinary team
• Cervical cytology trained or willing to undertake training
• Sexual and reproductive health competencies or willing to undertake training
• Evidence of leadership development
• Non-medical prescribing or willing to undertake training

Experience

• Current clinical HIV experience
• Portfolio of evidence showing achievements in practice/specialty

Knowledge

• Knowledge of HIV and sexual health including STI management.
• Understanding of issues around confidentiality and consent.
• Understanding of safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
• Understanding of risk management issues including incident reporting
• Awareness of local and national strategies in relation to delivery of HIV services
