Job description

  • Are you a Highways Engineer looking for your next challenge?
  • Would you like to join a forward thinking and innovative organisation that will invest in your career development?
  • Do you want to work in a role that allows you to stay local to Stockton-on-Tees and work from home for part of your week?
Look no further! Come and join the Highway Assets Team here at Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council! About Us

The highway infrastructure asset is the most valuable single asset owned by the Council and is vital to local economic prosperity and residents' quality of life.

The Highway Assets team is responsible for effective management of the Borough’s highway infrastructure assets including 900km of carriageway, approximately 30,000 streetlights and in excess of 400 structures.

We’re innovative, not afraid to try something new and are always looking for ways to maximise resources and evolve the way we deliver services for the future, to make a difference to the local community. For example, did you know we were one of the first local authorities to replace all of our streetlights with LEDs?

What’s it like to work for us?

Highways Asset Engineering at the Council is uniquely rewarding, offering a hands-on approach that allows you to oversee a project from initial design and planning all the way through to the construction and completion stages. This will include progressing the feasibility, design, procurement and project management of highways projects, ensuring outcomes are achieved on time and within budget.

You will play a vital role in implementing and delivering on the Council’s Highway Infrastructure Asset Management Policy and Strategy, with a focus on streetlighting assets, traffic signals, pay and display machines and vehicle activated signs/speed indicator devices across the Borough.

We pride ourselves on our professional approach, building excellent relationships with both internal and external stakeholders, such as contractors, utility companies, emergency services, and our residents and visitors.

In this role, travel is limited to within the Stockton-on-Tees borough, and we offer flexibility around working arrangements, including homeworking to support your work-life balance.

When not on-site or homeworking, you will be working in our brand-new modern office in central Stockton overlooking the River Tees, with excellent facilities including a Café and spaces for both collaborative and individual working.

Don’t just take our word for it! We asked the team what it’s like to work here and they said:

With flexible working, I can create a schedule that suits my needs, whether working from home, in the office, or on-site.

The team is incredibly supportive with a wealth of knowledge and there are great opportunities for progression.

What do you need to be a success?

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Experience in Highways Engineering, ideally also with electrical experience
  • A HNC in a relevant discipline or equivalent practical experience
  • Strong and versatile communication skills
  • A customer-focused and solution-oriented approach
  • Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
In return, we offer an excellent total reward package, including:
  • A career-graded salary from £31,067 - £39,513 (career grade document attached)
  • 27 days annual leave per year rising to 32 with 5 years’ service. Ability to purchase additional leave is also available.
  • Generous Pension Scheme through the LGPS with ability to pay extra and plan for retirement.
  • Access to a number of employee benefits including an employee counselling service, Physiotherapy, salary sacrifice Car Lease Scheme (including electric, hybrid and ultra-low emission vehicles) and more.
